Defence Children Services (DCS) is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated Classroom teacher, who is compassionate, enthusiastic and can promote and develop an ethos, culture and educational provision which empowers all to thrive. This role is based in the British section, at our AFNORTH International School, Netherlands.

The British Section is part of AFNORTH International School in Brunssum, The Netherlands and provides education for primary children from age 3 – 11 years.

Defence Children Services (DCS) is a Defence delivery organisation, subordinated under Army Regional Command. Our Vision is that we Educate the Child – Support the Family – Defend the Nation. HQ DCS is UK based at Trenchard Lines, Upavon and has forward deployed staff all over the world. DCS is responsible for the education and care of children of accompanied Service and Defence entitled personnel in 21 of MOD schools and settings, located across the globe in areas such as Cyprus, Germany, Itay, Brunei etc.

We also provide advice and guidance in respect of education for service families in the United Kingdom and the wider world.

This post is advertised as Full time at 30 hours per week.

Job Description

The Primary Class Teacher position is key within school, making positive differences to children’s lives each and every day. This includes the following expectations for the post holder:

  • To be responsible for learning and achievement of all children in a class, ensuring equal opportunity for all, and providing specialist teaching, if required, in a range of classes.
  • To raise standards of children’s attainment and progress within teaching groups and to supervise and support children’s progress in line with expectations of the school.
  • To accurately supervise the progress and achievements of children within teaching groups and provide feedback to enable them to progress at least in line with expectations.
  • Be accountable for children’s progress and development within teaching groups against targets set by the school.
  • To provide support and intervention for children at risk of underachieving.
  • Participate in collaborative planning and sharing good practice with other members of the school team both within the British Section and the wider international team.
  • Contribute to the development of a curriculum area or areas and subject specific resources.
  • Treat pupils with dignity, building relationships rooted in mutual respect, and at all times observing accurate boundaries appropriate to a teacher’s professional position.
  • Work proactively and effectively in partnerships with learners, parents/carers, governors, other staff and external agencies in the best interests of pupils.
  • To act within the statutory framework, which sets out professional duties and responsibilities and in line with the duties outlined on the current School Teachers Pay and Condition Document and achieve the DFE Teacher Standards in work and behaviours.
  • Take ownership for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people within School.

This is a full-time class teacher position. Specially recruited for overseas service appointees are not expected to return to the UK.

The following experience, skills, and qualifications are essential criteria for the role:

  • Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils
  • Promote good progress and outcomes by pupils
  • Demonstrate good knowledge of the English National Curriculum, and/or the EYFS Framework
  • Plan and teach well-structured lessons
  • Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils
  • Make accurate and productive use of assessment
  • Manage behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment
  • Fulfil wider professional responsibilities

Qualifications

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and successful completion of induction.
  • Evidence of qualification will be required at interview. All qualifications declared must be held at point of application and if applicable be in date.
  • Experience of teaching in a mainstream UK school or an MOD school in a primary phase (essential)
  • Evidence of recent and relevant training or professional development applicable to the post

Afnorth International School educates girls and boys from the age of five to 11 years old. It is located in Afnorth, in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The educational establishment is a state-funded, mainstream, primary school. It has a kindergarten and teaches the pupils through the medium of English and German. Afnorth International School aims to give every student an enriching and well-balanced curriculum. The hope is for them to leave the establishment with a strong knowledge of the English languages. The aim is for the children to develop the skills needed to progress their education. They will have personal, social, moral and physical development, as well as academic successes. The students are nurtured and supported throughout the primary stage by all members of staff. The pupils are able to go to out of school clubs. These are based on and off campus. Buses are available for the students who want to go on the school trips. The aim of the activities is to make sure the pupils acquire new skills. They should also make new friends from joining the clubs.
