Job overview

The role of a St. Andrews EAL teacher is to assess children’s areas of need and develop programs that meet those needs. The EAL teacher plans lessons alongside class teachers that reinforce the children’s in-class learning as well as providing small group work. This helps them to access the curriculum and allows them to participate more in their learning. They will be part of the learning support team.

General Responsibilities:

Understanding of EAL Pedagogy

●       Employ appropriate teaching methods tailored to the age, English level, and aptitude of the children.

●       Keep up-to-date with current educational practices and theory.

●       Plan, organise, and implement teaching programs to meet the needs of children, both in class and in small group withdrawal sessions.

●       Observe and assess children referred by class teachers.

 

Proactivity

●       Educate children to become lively, thinking, and responsive individuals through differentiated experiences in all curriculum areas.

●       Proactively seek out and identify the needs of any EAL students and develop customised action plans to effectively address those needs.

 

Collaborative Approach

●       Participate in year group planning meetings and EAL team meetings and submit planning in the required format to Year Leaders and the EAL coordinator.

●       Work as a team member to maintain high standards, differentiation, and continuity throughout the school.

 

Marking and Feedback, Assessment and Tracking

●       Implement the school’s assessment and reporting procedures and maintain records in accordance with school policies - including meeting with parents.

 

Curriculum Alignment

●       To be responsible for the care and educational development of children in accordance with the philosophy of the school and its curriculum program.

 

Communication Skills

●       Establish seamless communication with parents and classroom teachers.

 

Cultural Competancy

●       Facilitate smooth transition for children from different cultural backgrounds, with limited or no proficiency in English into St Andrews School, fostering belonging, inclusion, and clarity regarding school expectations.

 

Flexability and Adaptability

●       Participate in extracurricular activities weekly and organise one House Activity each year.

●       Support at least one primary residential trip per year and participate in all required activities.

●       Act as an ambassador for the school in the local and global community and support promotional activities for the advancement of the school.Implement school procedures and adapt to new initiatives.

●       Fulfill break time, lunchtime and after school duties according to duty rota and procedures.

 

 

Organisational Skills

●       Assist with planning integrated activities involving children from different classes/ year groups.

 

Leadership Potential

●       Supervise and instruct EAL Learning Support and EAL Higher Level Teaching Assistants as needed.

●       Direct EAL initiatives across the year group teams that you are engaged with.

 

Commitment to Professional Growth

●       Participate in professional development sessions arranged by the school.

●       Attend staff meetings, INSET, and cooperate with colleagues in curriculum development and school operations.

 

Applicants must have the following:

●       Native level English proficiency language (CEFR C2).

●       Qualified Teaching Status.

●       Experience working in an international school setting and/or working with children with English as an Additional Language (EAL).

●       Experience of teaching Phonics to young children.

●       Experience of teaching primary children (ages 4 to 11).

Desirable

●       Good understanding of the Primary National Curriculum for England and Wales (e.g., PGCE, Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood/Primary) or Experience in working in a school in the UK or a British International School)

●       Possession of an EAL qualification or relevant certification demonstrating expertise in supporting students with English as an Additional Language (EAL)

About St Andrews International School Bangkok

St Andrews International School Bangkok was founded in 1997 on an attractive, conveniently located site which today is home to our Primary School. Today we are a school of more than 1,900 students representing some 55 nationalities ranging from Foundation Stage 1 to Year 13. In August 2017 we opened an additional campus at a nearby prime city centre location which delivers state of the art purpose-built learning facilities to our High School.
