Job overview

The Primary Homeroom Teacher is responsible for creating a rich, inquiry based learning environment that promotes student learning and optimum personal growth, based on individual developmental needs. He or she establishes an effective classroom community and designs learning engagements to develop the understandings, skills, attitudes and knowledge identified in the curriculum. The Homeroom Teacher establishes good relationships with parents and works closely with colleagues to develop an efficient academic and pastoral team.

Responsibilities

Classroom Management

  • Plan instruction to appropriately challenge and differentiate for student needs. 
  • Create a learning environment conducive to maximising children’s learning through a range and variety of strategies.
  • Support students to become both independent and collaborative learners.
  • Support students’ access to learning through the effective use of IT.
  • Ensure a ‘Culture of Care’ and support to children and provide them with a secure and stimulating learning environment during all activities.
  • Identify students’ social and behavioural needs and refer concerns to the Counsellor/Learning Support teacher as relevant.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in planning sessions to ensure learning aligns both horizontally with the grade team and vertically through the scope and sequence.
  • Research, develop and adapt learning materials and make imaginative use of resources.
  • Keep up to date with curriculum development and to implement change in keeping with the school vision and strategic focus.
  • Implement strategies to ensure the development of children’s personal emotional and social needs.
  • Monitor, assess and record each child’s progress and set learning targets.
  • Celebrate the cultural diversity of the school population and use the diversity of the class as a resource.


Other Tasks

  • Plan, organise and participate in field trips to support learning outcomes.
  • Supervise and instruct a Teaching Assistant as relevant.
  • Ensure effective deployment of support with the PYP coordinator and Primary Leadership Team to ensure that programme requirements are met.
  • Inform the relevant administrator,  coordinator or counselor about issues of concern related to student welfare, achievement and behaviour.
  • Lead Parent/ Teacher/Student and Student-led conferences and provide feedback to parents about child’s  progress.
  • Attend meetings for planning and administration, in-service training and professional development workshop.
  • Engage in the Appraisal Process in accordance with the school’s policy.
  • Contribute to the extra curricular programme.


Requirements

  • Current classroom teacher qualification 
  • BA / BSc or equivalent university degree
  • Native English speaker is an advantage
  • Previous teaching experience within the last 2 years
  • Experience in an international school environment advantageous
  • PYP knowledge preferred
  • Interest or experience in Self Directed Learning and Agency
  • Experience in teaching learners with diverse needs
  • Strong classroom management skills
  • Strong organisational skills
  • Reflective and growth mindset
  • IT competence
  • The applicant must demonstrate knowledge of the developmental needs of children of 6-11 years
  • Empathy, social and communication skills
  • Documented record of excellence in teaching
  • Collaboration, teamwork and active participation in school life


Terms and conditions

The initial contract is for two years and is renewable. The generous salary and range of benefits will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate, with the overall package reflecting the importance of the position.
