Department -Performing Arts:

The department has strong musicians. Music lessons are fun and popular with students.

At The Sultan’s School the Performing Arts team comprises of four professionals, dedicated to maintaining and improving standards in music and drama. Music begins in Kindergarten and currently continues throughout school to Year 9; we are hoping to extent this to Year 11 next year. Drama begins in Year 7 and currently continues through to year 11.

The music team, comprising of three staff, offers both a Western and Arabic curriculum, to reflect the bilingual nature of the school; using both the Cambridge curriculum and Omani Ministry guidelines regarding cultural issues. The staff reflect the bilingual nature of the school, being both European and Omani. We also have one excellent dramatic arts teacher.

Music resources are good, all classrooms have keyboards, un-tuned percussion instruments, and tuned percussion instruments. There is a set of variously sized violins, enough to teach a class of 24 students.

In both music and drama, students enjoy one lesson, of one hour and twenty minutes, every week. Students are eager to learn the Performing Arts at The Sultan’s School and approach lessons with anticipation and interest. In collaboration, the Performing Arts team work annually with students across both Upper Primary and Secondary to produce a musical production, utilizing both musical and dramatic acting skills of students across cohorts.

Though there are areas for improvement (the formation of ensemble groups and outside peripatetic music teachers, for example), the Performing Arts department is a friendly and vibrant place, where colleagues value the individual skills of one another, and work together to help students fulfill their creative potential.
