Primary School

At Canberra Grammar Primary School it is the student who is at the centre of our School, and the driving force of what we do as educators comes from knowing our students – their needs, characteristics and wellbeing. As our attention is focused on who we teach, it is from this point that decisions flow.

Through our actions and decisions it is evident that each child is a valued member of our School. Each child is viewed as a capable, competent and an active participant in his or her own learning journey. The educational experience focuses on the development of the whole child, thus encompassing a student’s social, emotional, spiritual, physical and cultural needs alongside their academic, intellectual and creative growth.

In establishing a successful environment for learning we strive to instil in every child a sense of belonging, connectedness and security. In doing so, the importance of productive partnerships between parents and the School is acknowledged and actively encouraged. Through the explicit connections that are formed between home and School, the knowledge and understanding that exists of a child by both parents and educators is drawn together.

At CGS Primary School we are passionate educators of young children and view this period of development as unique; setting a foundation for future life. We believe that while individuals learn in different ways all children can learn and perform academically through an educational process that is responsive to their backgrounds, experiences and needs. Our passion for early-years education and belief that all children can learn leads us to seek out, analyse and incorporate educational philosophies from around the world. Our beliefs, research and ongoing contemplation shape how we approach our interaction with our students and their families.

We embrace the importance of co-education. Our boys and girls have an opportunity to learn from and with one another in a learning environment that is attuned to preparing our students as young leaders of the next generation. In a world that is global, technologically advanced, and rapidly changing in its educational, political, economic and social structures we provide an education that enables our students to be lifelong learners: recognising the importance of diversity and interdependence and have the capacity to think critically, creatively, reflectively and empathetically.

As we educate our boys and girls to be part of a constantly changing world we seek to prepare all in our care to become intelligent, innovative and internationally minded citizens; citizens who are confident, creative and compassionate leaders of the future placing the welfare of others before self and willing to embrace the challenges of our century as opportunities to make a positive difference.

Change the World, Teach at CGS

Canberra Grammar School is a vibrant and rewarding place in which to work. It is also a very exciting time at CGS as the School now offers full co-education across all years, from Pre-School to Year 12, with significant growth to our leadership, teaching and support staff.

By joining the CGS team, you will be working alongside exceptionally dedicated, qualified and experienced staff, and engaging daily with bright, motivated and open-hearted students and to enjoy the amenities of life on a beautiful, open school campus in a city that is clear, uncongested, and affords unrivalled access to many of the leading political, cultural and intellectual institutions of Australia. Canberra is an ideal place in which to live and raise a family. It is within striking distance of the mountains for skiing and the coast for surfing; it is an easy drive from Sydney; there are frequent flights to all parts of Australia and the city itself is virtually traffic-free.

Canberra Grammar School is committed to that by aiming at all times to be a professionally stimulating and rewarding employer; one that is committed to innovation, to high-quality professional development, to the constant interchange of ideas and to personal and professional investment in staff who seek always to enhance the quality of education both within and beyond the School.

That aspiration for staff culture is central to the School’s capacity to flourish in all areas of its endeavour and it is reflected in the School’s commitment to recognising and rewarding staff and to supporting a positive, professional, caring and collegial working environment through:

  • Remuneration, terms and conditions that generally compare favourably with those in the non-independent school sectors in the ACT
  • The initiatives entailed in the School’s strategic plans for professional learning and renewal
  • The on-going financial commitment to the Staff Professional Excellence Fund
  • The provision of personal support services and a comprehensive Employee Assistance Program
  • A range of personal benefits associated with employment at the School
  • Support for collegial staff organisation and representation; and
  • Recognition of contribution and outstanding achievement.
