Job overview

Dollar Academy is a long-established co-educational independent HMC school in central Scotland with around 1250 pupils between the ages of 5 and 18, including ninety boarders. It is set in a beautiful location, approximately 40 minutes north of Edinburgh, and has excellent facilities. The school is oversubscribed and places are awarded on academic merit.

The Prep and Junior Schools are located within the same campus as the Senior School and look after the education of around 375 pupils. The Prep School guides the first years of primary education and has 10 classes, with two parallel groups at each level from P1 to P5. The Junior School (P6 and P7) plays an important transitional role in preparing pupils for the move to Senior School. Both Junior 1 and Junior 2 are admission stages, enabling new pupils to join the Academy in the two years leading to the Senior School.

The Academy aims to provide a progressive curricular flow from age 5 to age 18, and there are demonstrable benefits of this policy. Working within the framework of the Curriculum for Excellence we provide a broad based curriculum enabling children to learn and develop through their primary years. Primary teachers co-operate closely with their senior colleagues to deliver a well-balanced and stimulating curriculum which includes the very best specialist skills teaching in a variety of subjects such as Art, Music, PE, Modern Languages and Technology.

The academic standard throughout the school is high. We believe that we have retained what is best from traditional approaches, while incorporating the most effective modern strategies and key principles from the Curriculum for Excellence. Individual, class and group teaching methods are used; we have a well-resourced Support for Learning Department which ensures continuity of support throughout the Academy.

The Academy has a rich co-curricular programme in which all members of staff participate. Involvement in the wider life of the school is encouraged and the ability to coach a hockey or rugby team, or offer an activity, would be particularly useful.

We have a further vacancy and seek to appoint a dynamic, inspiring primary teacher to join the Prep and Junior team. The salary for the post will be in accordance with the SNCT main grade scale, with the Dollar enhancement of 10% in addition. Candidates should ideally either be registered with the GTC Scotland, or eligible for registration.

Applicants should complete the Academy’s Teaching Staff Application Form (download from the Academy’s website http://www.dollaracademy.org.uk/vacancies) and provide a covering letter.

A CV is optional. These should be e-mailed to: The Rector of Dollar Academy at: rector@dollaracademy.org.uk

The closing date for applications is Friday 10th June 2016.

Please note that all teaching appointments are subject to receipt of a satisfactory PVG membership certificate from Disclosure Scotland.

About Dollar Academy

Dollar Academy was founded in 1818 as the UK’s first co-educational day and boarding school and has been at the heart of Scotland’s educational development for 200 years. The school is the Sunday Times Scottish Independent School of the Year 2018.

Dollar has over 1250 pupils aged 5-18, of whom approximately 75 are boarders. The school’s extensive 70 acre campus is set in a landscape of extraordinary natural beauty at the foot of the Ochil Hills in Central Scotland and is within easy reach of both Edinburgh and Glasgow. Edinburgh airport is conveniently situated and can be reached in 45 minutes.

Dollar is distinguished by its excellence in pastoral care, co-curricular provision and classroom teaching.

Enjoyment of learning lies at the heart of this school and the aim is for all pupils to gain satisfaction from a real commitment to study and participation in the great range of sporting, art and cultural activities on offer.

Dollar pupils undertake internationally recognised SQA examination courses and, in a typical year, over 65% of exam results are at Grade A. Although firmly grounded in the values of Scottish education, Dollar takes a deliberately international approach and the diverse boarding community is at the heart of school life.
