Job overview

A Primary Teacher is needed for Southern International School Hatyai (SIH), a rapidly growing, co-educational Cambridge International School in the prosperous and friendly southern city of Hat Yai in Thailand.

So, perhaps you have just had a half-term break or are coming to the end of your PGCE, and you are wondering what the next challenge will be. As a qualified teacher you have plenty of options to choose from. If you have thought about working abroad then maybe now is not the time but perhaps next year will be. If you are already working abroad then maybe you are thinking of the next move when your contract ends. Either way, if you are enthusiastic about teaching in a young, growing and ambitious international school located in a wonderful part of the world, if you have a sense of adventure, are passionate about making a difference to the lives of young people, want to challenge your students and be challenged, and want to develop your career in a supportive, collaborative environment where you are encouraged to take risks with learning, then you should consider SIH.

We are already thinking ahead to 2019 and expect to have a vacancy in the Primary School, either because our numbers are growing, or because a current teacher is moving on. We are already fully staffed for 2018-19 as only one teacher is leaving us (5% labour turnover ratio), so vacancies here are not common. This tells you something about life in SIH, Hat Yai and Thailand.

We would like to hear from you if you are seriously considering us for 2019. We will offer informal Skype interviews to shortlisted candidates and a contract to the successful one as soon as practicable. We see early commitment as an opportunity.

Our Primary section has one class in each year group except Year 2, which has two classes from 2018-19. Our curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum, but the main offer is through the IPC. If you have taught the IPC or have a working knowledge of it, this is an advantage, but otherwise a willingness to undergo training for this exciting curriculum is essential.

Any specialism in SEN, PSHE, Drama, Art or PE would be welcomed and should be referred to in your application. Please also indicate which year groups or Key Stage you have taught in or prefer to teach in.

Our children are mostly Thai and from other Asian countries with parents who are committed to giving their children an international education. Our parents are extremely loyal and supportive, and participate in many school events and activities.

The successful candidate will be joining the school at an exciting period in its development. We have just started our third year of operation and are a candidate school for ISQM. There are opportunities to develop yourself professionally and personally in a safe, happy, supportive environment. Hat Yai is a wonderful, safe city that provides a great quality of life, and this partly explains why so many of our staff stay with us.

Please read the job description and person specification, and look at our website and Facebook pages to get a feel for working in SIH and living in Southern Thailand.

 You MUST be/have

· UK National or first language English speaker.

· A university degree and postgraduate teaching qualification or equivalent.

For overseas teachers we provide a housing allowance, healthcare insurance and a contribution to flights from and to your country of origin at the start and end of the contract. We also pay for visa and work permit costs, and scholarships for up to two dependent children.

We will contact your referees unless you specify otherwise.

Shortlisted candidates will be sent more details including the current staff handbook.

NOTE: We reserve the right to interview and offer to a strong candidate prior to the closing date. It is strongly recommended that candidates submit their applications as soon as possible.

Southern International School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Please note that should your application be successful a police check will be undertaken in the country of origin; in the UK, a disclosure will be requested from the UK’s Disclosure and Barring Service.

About Southern International School HatYai

The Southern International School Hat Yai was established in 2015 to serve the needs of both Thai nationals and expatriates in the region who wish their children to have a broad and balanced international education. School enrolment currently stands at approximately 190 students with classes ranging from Early Years to Year 11. The Primary section follows the International Primary Curriculum whilst the curriculum for Years 7-11 is based on the National Curriculum of England and follows Cambridge Secondary 1 and IGCSE.

In June 2019 we were awarded the  ISQM Silver accreditation, a massive achievement for such a young school. Our report describes us a '"good school" and notes that "Students' personal development and the school's partnership with parents are outstanding." It adds, "Teachers' subject knowledge is outstanding" and "Teachers plan lessons that are exciting and interesting."

At a recent marketing event we had a tremendous amount of support from our  current parents, who spoke openly to prospective parents about the trust they placed in our school and the amount of individual care and attention paid to their children by our teaching staff. The students feel nurtured, cared for and have many opportunities to learn 21st Century skills and eternal values. We are a happy school. Please look at our Facebook page to get a feel for our culture.

As a young school we are looking for people who are not only excellent teachers but  also willing to contribute to the overall development of the school over the coming years as we make innovation, creativity, integrity, development and professionalism the core values of everyone working at the school. If you would like to be part of a team working together in a professional and collegiate environment then this is the school for you. We are happy for any shortlisted candidate to communicate with our current teachers to get their perspective on living in Hat Yai and working at SIH.
