If you are someone who has the ability to engage and enthuse students, coupled with the drive and commitment required to become a truly outstanding teacher, then we would like to hear from you. The successful candidate will positively contribute to raising standards of attainment and achievement for all pupils at Excelsior in all aspects of Academy life through providing high quality teaching and high-quality support and guidance to all pupils in their care, through fully utilising their skills, talents, knowledge and expertise and through setting a positive example in their own professional behaviour.

Excelsior Academy was opened in 2008 and became the first All Through school in Newcastle, offering education to pupils from 3 to 19 years of age. Excelsior serves one of the most challenging communities both in the region and nationally. All pupils in our primary, secondary and sixth form provision have access to the same high-quality teaching, exceptional facilities and fabulous resources. Our purpose-built building provides excellent facilities for the 1500+ pupils who study here. Approximately 200 pupils attend our primary school, 1100 in the secondary phase and 180 in the sixth form. We are a popular choice for our local community and are now oversubscribed in most year groups.

Excelsior is part of the Laidlaw Schools Trust (LST) established by our patron, Lord Laidlaw of Rothiemay, in 2008. LST prides itself on being a progressive, inclusive trust that supports every child to develop their talents whatever they may be. LST academies enjoy strong support from an experienced central team and every school shares the LST core values; ambitious, brave, curious, determined, extraordinary, fast and good. The Trust hosts one of the national Behaviour Hubs and has strong central resources linked to safeguarding and a Trust School Improvement Team.

Excelsior Academy is an all-through school located in Newcastle, Tyne and Wear. The school was first established in 2008, as a secondary school and sixth form (later split into three separate schools), and in 2012 it was decided that the school would merge with a local primary school, creating a new school for pupils aged 3-19. With around 1200 pupils, Excelsior Academy is larger than the average secondary school, and covers a culturally and economically diverse catchment area, a fact reflected in the school’s intake.

Values and Vision

Excelsior Academy works hard in order to ensure that the transition of pupils from primary to secondary provision is as smooth and non-disruptive as possible. As a relatively young school, it is able to make extensive use of a wide range of modern facilities and learning resources, and offer a diverse and far-reaching curriculum, with older pupils having numerous academic and vocational qualifications to choose from. Excelsior Academy also works hard to provide for pupils with special educational needs.

Ofsted

“Students are most enthusiastic about the academy and talk about being ‘privileged’ to have so many opportunities. They say that they particularly like the fact that they are respected and listened to. The percentage of students gaining five good passes at GCSE, including English and mathematics, has risen by an average of six percentage points each year since the academy opened in 2008. This was from a very low baseline.”
