Job overview
Holy Mary British Catholic School started as a Nursery School here in Madrid through the vision of its founders, Marta and María Riva de Aldama. It was opened to cater for parents who wished their children to receive a British education based on Catholic values. Currently, we are the only British Catholic School towards the centre of Madrid with around 750 students enrolled from Nursery to Year 13. We are a committed member of NABSS, CISC and ACADE.
Our curriculum is creative and inclusive, and we count on fantastic teachers and children, together with highly supportive parents. The school creates and promotes a warm, family-oriented atmosphere.
Due to a maternity leave context, we seek to recruit as soon as is reasonably possible, an outstanding, inspirational primary class teacher to join our team of dedicated, talented, and enthusiastic professionals.
Start date: Probably from Monday 11th January 2027. Possibly sooner.
Suitable candidates will have:
At least 2 years teaching experience within KS1 or KS2
EU citizenship/Spanish residence (time is not on our side in terms of a non-EU hire)
Qualified teacher status
A commitment towards the safeguarding of all young people
A curiosity towards and proactive tolerance of difference and change
A supportive attitude towards our Catholic ethos
Applicants should have:
The ability to inspire young people
Excellent interpersonal skills
High expectations of the achievement and behaviour of all children
A diligent work ethic
An awareness of the research findings of John Hattie and Carol Dweck
We offer a competitive salary – for Spain – and the opportunity to enjoy living and working in the beautiful, historic, and cosmopolitan city of Madrid. Initially, this post is to cover maternity leave. However, for the right candidate the contract would be extended beyond the maternity leave.
Apply via TES – including a letter of application of no more than two sides of A4 with a current photograph, and with the names and contact details of at least two referees – one of whom must be your present employer – and email to: vacancies@holymary.es
Final date for applications: Monday 9th November, 2026
Holy Mary is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Successful applicants are expected to organise and fund their own child protection screening procedures relevant to the post and prior to starting the post.

Holy Mary is a family-owned Catholic British school in Barrio de Salamanca, in the heart of Madrid. Founded in 2009 by two sisters who believed that education should feel like family, we educate 640 students from Early Years to A-Levels across three campuses.
We are not part of a corporate group. There are no shareholders, no private equity investors, no board meetings in London. Our founders still walk the corridors every morning. Our Headteacher knows every teacher by name.
We teach the full British curriculum with small class sizes, a genuine sense of community, and Catholic values that shape how we treat people - not just what we teach.
If you are a QTS-qualified teacher considering a move abroad, here is what you should know about Holy Mary:
- You will not be a number on a spreadsheet. There are 640 students. You matter here.
- Small class sizes that let you actually teach
- A Headteacher who teaches and a leadership team you can talk to directly
- Funded CPD: conference attendance, training, professional growth
- Life in Madrid: sunshine, culture, and a cost of living that gives you your life back
Our teachers come from the UK, Ireland, and beyond. Most choose to stay. We understand why.
Campuses: Infant & Lower Primary (C/ Alfonso Rodriguez Santamaria 23-25), Upper Primary (C/ Cinca 20-22-24), Secondary (C/ Arga 17-19). All in Barrio de Salamanca, Madrid 28002.
