Job overview

We are seeking to appoint an excellent Principal to join Avon Valley College in September 2017.

We are looking for an individual with a strong track record of performance, who relishes the opportunity to lead in all areas of education, and is driven by establishing a culture of pupil and staff happiness, high achievement, safety and personal growth.

As a Deputy Headteacher /Principal, your skills may lie in the leadership of teaching and learning and curriculum development or you may be an established Headteacher /Principal who is excited not only by our model of leadership but also by the opportunity to participate in the development of educational excellence across the Salisbury Plain area.

Salisbury Plain Academies wants its Principals to focus on what they do best - improving the performance of staff, pupils and the academy’s reach in the local community. The day-to-day operational management of the school is the responsibility of the Director of Business and Finance supported by the Core Services Team - they are responsible for budget management, estates management, line management of operational support staff and ICT at the Academy.

Avon Valley College is the one secondary school within our multi-academy trust.  It is much valued by its community which itself reflects the social mix of the locality in that military families make up a significant number of our schools’ populations. As part of the rebasing of troops from Germany, all local schools will see a rise in population between now and 2020 and because Avon Valley will see numbers go from just under 600 now to 1150-1200 by 2019-2020, Wiltshire Council is in the process of a phased building programme to bring new classrooms to Avon Valley College by 2018-2019. The Trust intends that phased programme to continue in order to refresh and renew the entire estate.

Respect. Determination. Excellence.

Avon Valley Academy is a thriving, co-educational school, educating young people between the ages of 11 and 16 years. Located in Durrington, our school has a strong reputation for being at the heart of the community and has built strong relationships with the two local army bases, at Larkhill and Bulford.

As a school, we aim for every lesson and every day to be exceptional. To achieve this, we ensure that all staff have access to a wide variety of training and are given time to foster strong relationships with our students. Our staff take pride in how well they know our students, and are always looking to go the extra mile to help them achieve their dreams.

With our strong pastoral care and high standards for behaviour, our school encourages students to have high self-worth and love coming to school. This has created a vibrant school community in which each individual can thrive.

In May 2022, we joined Acorn Education Trust, which has provided exciting opportunities to improve local education and draw on collective experience. We work closely with other schools within the Trust and the central team to help us continue to grow from strength to strength.

Our school has a wide range of excellent facilities, including:

  • Sports fields, netball courts, tennis courts, astro turf pitches, a gym and a sports hall;
