Job overview

Wing College in Bournemouth is a vibrant and ambitious independent specialist day and residential college for up to 46 students aged 16 - 25 with Asperger’s Syndrome or high functioning autism and associated conditions. The college is centrally located, with the main site and 5 care homes in close proximity to each other. It has an excellent reputation and is now looking to appoint a new Principal who will build on its many strengths while also bringing new and innovative practices that will ensure it is at the forefront of best practice nationally. They must also share the commitment to providing experiences which equip the students with the skills to achieve their personal best, however it is defined by them or for them, and to be able to live happy independent, or semi-independent, lives in the community.

Wing College has enjoyed great success in recent years and has well-established relationships with a number of commissioning bodies locally and nationally. This success has been built on an excellent team ethos with skilled and dedicated education, care and therapy professionals working closely together to achieve a common goal. This strength will provide the foundation for future development and success. There is a commitment to ensuring the curriculum continues to evolve so that it best meets the needs of the young people, providing them with skills and experiences that will meet local priorities. Alongside this is a focus on further developing college systems so that students consistently make outstanding progress that can be evidenced appropriately.

The school is part of Cambian Children’s Services whose vision is to be the leading provider of specialist children’s services within the UK by strengthening their offering and expanding their portfolio across the country. This is an exciting time to join Cambian as it grows and develops and they want senior leaders who share their ambition and commitment to excellence. Their commitment to enabling individuals to achieve their personal best applies equally to staff and you will receive comprehensive support to ensure you build your career and develop professionally.

The new Principal will share the college’s commitment to a multi-disciplinary provision, providing dynamic and inspirational leadership to all areas creating a shared strategic vision. If you are a senior education leader, with a successful track record of sustained improvement and a determination to maximise the opportunities available then this role offers an excellent opportunity to challenge yourself in a new environment. Previous experience in SEND or residential settings is not essential although an understanding of Individualised Learner Records and EFA requirements is desirable. You will also recognise the importance of providing a comprehensive 24-hour curriculum that constantly evolves to meet the needs of students.

You must be ambitious and forward thinking with the ability to inspire and lead change but also the focus to ensure successful outcomes are reached. You will be calm under pressure, have a ‘can-do’ attitude and be able to build, lead and inspire effective teams and to be an effective team member. Above all you will share the college’s passion and belief that students, their learning, their care and developing their potential is at the heart of all decisions.

The Wing Centre is the post-16 department of Southlands School. It is a 38 week per year residential special college for young men of 16 - 19 years who have Asperger Syndrome. For students living close to the Centre there is some flexibility for day provision.

The purpose of The Wing Centre is to use the help available through specialist approaches, environments and staff expertise, to prepare students to meet the demands of adult life in a positive way. We aim to provide a supportive environment and a range of opportunities within which students can develop self-esteem, self-advocacy, personal dignity, confidence, maturity and enjoy positive relationships leading to optimum quality of life. This is achieved through therapy, support and appropriate educational, social, emotional, and spiritual programmes that take account of AS learning styles. Individualised plans are designed to meet specific needs and these plans form the basis of the three-way partnership between student, family and staff. A focused, enjoyable and calm atmosphere is encouraged at all times.
