Job overview

Our College has a clear purpose – to provide a life-changing experience for all young people. We have grown significantly over the last few years and now have over 2,800 students. We provide a variety of different pathways for our young people enabling them to thrive and achieve.

Over a third of our students come from a low-income household, and a large number receive free school meals, but this is no barrier to their aspiration, progress and development. Our values and culture are summarised in the word “ASPIRE” – Ambitious, Supportive, Passionate, Inspiring, Respectful and Encouraging.

In our last Ofsted Inspection in 2016, we were judged Outstanding. Since then, we have been recognised as the TES Sixth Form College of 2019, and students continue to achieve excellent results – overall 77% of our unique Class of 2021, achieved high grades A* A and B (or equivalent); placing Huddersfield New College in the top 10% of colleges nationally, for student progress. We are also ranked nationally in the top 3 of organisations for Equality and Diversity.

The context of our work continues to evolve and there is further change ahead. The introduction of T levels in particular, is one that we are already responding to. The College’s success has not been by accident. It is due to a combination of effective and astute strategic leadership, being a College that cares about staff and student wellbeing, and by having an inclusive and aspirational culture that everyone signs up to.

After 14 years at the helm, our Principal Angela Williams OBE, has announced her intention to step down. As a result, we are looking for an exceptional individual to lead us through the next phase of our development. We are excited by the challenges ahead and recognise the need to continuously evolve, to provide our students with the education and life chances they deserve.

With a broad and in-depth understanding of 16 – 19 education, you will have an exceptional track record of leadership. You will be used to organisations of scale, and be equally comfortable leading the strategic direction of the organisation alongside operational activities. Your exceptional influencing and people skills will set you apart; both are vital in this high-profile role. The College is seen as a key part of the community, so maintaining and developing effective partnerships with a range of organisations and stakeholders will be essential. Above all, you will be ambitious for our students and the College.  Your belief in the power and moral purpose of education, will have shaped your career so far.

Closing date: Tuesday 4th January 2022

We are committed to equality and diversity, and safeguarding young people. We welcome applications from all sections of the community, particularly from Black and Minority Ethnic groups that are under-represented in the College. All posts are subject to an Enhanced DBS Disclosure.
