Job overview

At Action For Kids, we focus on supporting disabled young people to achieve greater independence by providing them with training, work experience, job coaching and mobility equipment. We are excited by the prospect of expanding and deepening our support through the creation of AFK College, a special free school, which Action For Kids (“AFK”) is proposing to open through the AFK College Trust. It is a challenging role with great potential.

We have ambitious plans for AFK to play a leading role in transforming the lives of disabled young people and a crucial part of this process will be the creation of the new post-19 training centre which will focus on empowering disabled young people to gain, and sustain, paid work. The Principal of the College will be a key member of our leadership team.

The College will use a radical new curriculum which we have developed, based upon our experience working with disabled young people over more than 20 years. It will prepare students, aged 16-19 with learning disabilities, autism and communication / interaction difficulties, for work and for living independently.

You will be an experienced, senior member of a school leadership team who wants to work more creatively and be more innovative in support of disabled young people. You will, of course, bring excellent knowledge of current best practice in special education.

The Principal of the College will need the drive, personal attributes, enthusiasm and commitment to work collaboratively with the Trust’s Board and that of Action For Kids to ensure the success of the Free College.

As this role is a start-up one, dependent on achieving approval from the Department for Education, it is conditional on a number of factors. Please read the Terms of Appointment section of the Recruitment Pack carefully so that you are familiar with the timing and conditions.

Closing date for receipt of a completed application: Sunday 26th February
Interviews will take place: on Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th March 2017
