Job overview
The Chair and Governing Body of Durham High School are inviting applications from outstanding individuals for the position of Principal.
Durham High School is a leading Independent Day School for girls aged 3 - 18. We were one of the first schools in the North East of England to take girls' education seriously and we are proud to continue that tradition today; we seek to develop the potential of every girl in all areas of life.
The School is consistently the best in County Durham for academic results and pastoral support. Classes are small and the pastoral care of pupils is given a very high priority. Our pupils consistently achieve some of the best results in the area at both GCSE and A Level.
This is a tremendous opportunity for a leader with the commitment, energy and stamina to embrace life in a busy day school. You will have proven commitment to achieving high academic standards along with excellent pastoral care and offering a breadth of educational experience for all pupils.

Durham High School is an Independent Day School for pupils aged 3 - 18. We are a community where ambitions flourish, talents shine and friendships are born. We have been privileged to educate girls for the last 141 years and our rich heritage is very important to us.
We recently announced a phased move to co-education: from Nursery to Year 6 by September 2025, and from Year 7 to Sixth Form by September 2026. The evolution towards becoming co-educational is reflective of a school that never stands still, and the decision allows the school to move from a position of strength with great confidence and ambition.
Our key task as educators is preparing our pupils for life beyond Durham High, and that is a co-educational world where women and men work, study and live side by side. We're really proud of our educational offering at Durham High School and we are confident that what we do so well for girls, we can also offer boys, whilst protecting the integrity of our offer, reaffirming our core values and delivering an education that will equip girls and boys for life beyond the school gate. The transition is rooted in an educational philosophy that embraces inclusion and respect.
At Durham High School our focus is to provide exceptional education, where our core philosophy and values are at the heart of our offer. Durham High School stands for academic excellence and personal growth underpinned by our Christian ethos. We are committed to developing the potential of every child in all areas of their life and encouraging academic excellence and a lifelong love of learning. We provide a nurturing and inspiring environment where every girl or boy is known, valued, supported and empowered.
Durham High is a school that welcomes students from all faiths and backgrounds; we foster an environment where diversity is respected and celebrated. Above all, Durham High is a seat of learning, and this new direction presents a powerful opportunity to elevate our educational excellence, enrich our multicultural community and equip our pupils with the skills, confidence and international perspective needed to thrive in an ever-evolving world.
This is an exciting time to join Durham High School. Our recent strategic partnership with Galaxy Global Education presents new opportunities for growth and innovation.
