Job overview

George Heriot’s is one of Scotland’s foremost schools, steeped in history and tradition. Dating back over 350 years, the School has an enviable reputation for its high academic standards, supportive pastoral care and its extra-curricular life. It is a place where children flourish and are happy.

In 1659 the first 35 pupils came to Heriot’s as Foundationers. The School was founded through the generosity of ‘Jinglin’ Geordie’ Heriot – jeweller to James VI – for the education of Edinburgh’s ‘faitherless bairns’. The Heriot’s Foundation has always been central to our purpose. Heriot’s welcomes boys and girls from age 4 to 18, in a fully co-educational setting; our emphasis is on developing each child’s potential in a happy, caring and stimulating environment. Heriot’s is a family community – Junior and Senior schools together on one campus.

The Board of Governors is seeking to appoint a new Principal to succeed Mrs Lesley Franklin, who is stepping down after 25 years at the School. Building on a strong platform financially, educationally and operationally, the next Principal will be an outstanding educational leader able to develop and deliver a vision that ensures the School looks to the future with continued dynamism and ambition.

The appointee will be an inspiring leader and a compelling communicator, with strong academic credentials and business acumen.  The next Principal will be a highly visible leader, with the strength of intellect, collegiality and gravitas to work well with a committed staff team and with Governors and external stakeholders. They must be able to demonstrate a commitment to, and empathy with, Heriot’s heritage, values and ethos and an appreciation of Heriot’s Foundation and the important role it plays in the life of the School today.
