Job overview

The Erskine Stewart’s Melville Schools (ESMS) are a unique family of schools in Edinburgh, providing a first-class education for boys and girls aged 3-18. The largest school organisation in Scotland and the biggest independent school in the European Union, ESMS comprises a co-educational Junior School, The Mary Erskine School (senior girls), Stewart’s Melville College (senior boys) and a co-educational Sixth Form.

The Governing Council seeks an experienced educationalist for August 2018 following the retirement of David Gray after 18 years of outstanding service. An exceptional strategic leader, the new Principal will lead and inspire across a large, complex and high-performing organisation, setting out a clear vision to take ESMS forward into the next exciting stage in its evolution. This will include playing an important role in the establishment of an ESMS branded School in China which is currently being explored and it is envisaged that the Principal would sit on the Board.

The successful candidate will combine a proven track record of successful senior leadership with the capacity to manage complexity and the strategic capabilities to shape an ambitious future for ESMS. A strong understanding of the business dimensions of modern headship is crucial, as are the warmth, gravitas and political acuity to be a compelling ambassador locally, nationally and internationally.

About The Erskine Stewart's Melville Schools (ESMS)

The ESMS family of schools comprises Stewart's Melville College, The Mary Erskine School and the ESMS Junior School.  Stewart's Melville College and The Mary Erskine School are closely twinned through a shared House system and co-education in many activities, including trips, shows, concerts, orchestras, bands, numerous Outdoor Education projects and in the Combined Cadet Force. The co-educational Sixth Form aims to offer a genuine pre-university experience.  ESMS has a charitable foundation and provides financial assistance to over 150 bursary holders, who attend Stewart's Melville College or The Mary Erskine School.

Stewart's Melville College is an independent, non-denominational day school for boys aged 11-18 in Edinburgh.  There are approximately 740 boys, of whom about 25 are boarders. Admission is through assessment.   The school has existed for more than 150 years and was voted The Sunday Times Independent Secondary School of the Year in 2013.

The school enjoys an excellent academic reputation and prides itself on the range of musical, dramatic and other extra-curricular opportunities offered to its boys.  The playing fields and Pavilion at Inverleith underpin a fine tradition in rugby and cricket and boys also have access to the hockey pitches and other sporting facilities at The Mary Erskine School.

The Mary Erskine School is an independent, non-denominational day school for girls aged 11-18 in Edinburgh.  There are approximately 740 girls, of whom about 25 are boarders.  Admission is through assessment.  The school is one of the oldest girls' schools in the UK, having been founded in 1694, and was voted The Sunday Times Independent Secondary School of the Year in 2012.

The school enjoys an excellent academic reputation and prides itself on the range of musical, dramatic and other extra-curricular opportunities offered to its girls.  Girls have sung in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo choir, represented the UK in the European Youth Parliament on four occasions, performed in professional West End touring shows, gone on incredible trips to diverse locations including Malawi, Vietnam, New Zealand and China, and represented their school and country in sports including hockey, fencing, cricket and equestrianism.

Values and vision

ESMS has nine core values that are recognised by all members of the school community: kindness, respect, commitment, enthusiasm, responsibility, grace, appreciation, confidence and integrity.

The school follows its own curriculum prior to examination years.  The Curriculum for Excellence is not followed.  Boys and girls generally sit the public examinations prescribed by the Scottish Qualifications Authority.  It is normal for boys and girls to sit a combination of eight subjects at National 5 and to proceed to Higher courses in S5. The majority will return for a final year in Sixth Form, with a high proportion taking Advanced Highers.  ‘A’ Levels are offered in Art and in Music.
