Job overview

The British International School, Cairo (BISC) is a selective, co-educational, academic day school with approximately 1,100 pupils aged 3-18 and is committed to excellence in all its activities in and out of the classroom. The school’s mission is to be a vibrant international community offering an outstanding British-style education, focused on independent learning and the promotion of global citizenship. Its vision is to inspire all members of the school
community to be curious, courageous, engaged and resilient learners, respecting
diversity and motivated, as global citizens, to effect a positive change in society. It aims to be a first-class school in which children are prepared to go on to the best local, regional and international universities and institutions of higher education and to positions of leadership in all walks of life. The vast majority
of students go on to universities overseas.

BISC provides a challenging and stimulating environment in which English-speaking students from diverse international backgrounds benefit from an education which is British in its principles, practices, curricular structures and
assessment, and which encourages pupils’ appreciation of the host culture and ensures appropriate competence in the Arabic language. At BISC all are valued equally and encouraged to fulfil their aspirations and potential.

The School was established in 1976 to serve the educational needs of expatriate children in Cairo, although two-thirds of the students now come from local Egyptian families. Over time it has built its reputation on the basis of its academic record and the breadth of its educational programmes. Graduates of BISC progress to some of the finest universities in the world, and BISC is regarded as the school that makes tomorrow’s leaders.Over time, the school has grown and embraced children from the Commonwealth, the English-speaking Egyptian community and other nationalities tied to British-type schooling. In 1989, the School further strengthened its commitment to its international outlook by the introduction of the International Baccalaureate Diploma course, and, in 2008, BISC opened a state of the art campus in Beverly Hills, North West of Cairo.

Now one of the leading schools in the Middle East, BISC achieves excellent academic results and is an Accredited Member of the Council of British International Schools (COBIS) and the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools (IAPS). It is also in membership of the British Schools of the Middle East (BSME). COBIS and IAPS are constituent members of the UK Independent Schools Council (ISC), which entitles BISC to a formal inspection from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).

BISC promotes the values of a pluralist society and provides equal opportunities to all pupils to develop their full intellectual, aesthetic, emotional, physical and moral potential. It gives boys and girls a broadly based, appropriate education in which they strive for excellence and aim for the highest standards in their sporting and extra-curricular activities. BISC provides a structured and challenging academic education within a disciplined and supportive environment, which enables pupils to develop into responsible men and women of integrity who can take their place confidently in a rapidly changing world. The school provides the best possible resources and facilities for teaching and learning.

BISC fosters an atmosphere of mutual respect, tolerance and regard for all members of society. It teaches essential human values such as honesty, trustworthiness, honour, loyalty, compassion and charity. It reaches out to all its
families, the local community and the wider world and promotes international cooperation and understanding.

As a vibrant international school, children are accepted for admission at three main entry points: in the Junior School (FS1), in the Senior School (Y7) and in
the Sixth Form (Y12). The School is, nevertheless, accommodating to the needs of international families.

The diverse international student body leads to the natural development of goodwill, friendliness, tolerance and understanding among the pupils, with over 1,100 students representing over 40 nationalities.

In the Junior School, the Early Years Education is firmly rooted in the progressive practice of the UK Foundation Stage Curriculum (FS1-2), and Junior Education (Y1-6) is founded on the National Curriculum of England.

In the Senior School, the Senior Education (Y7-11) has a broad balance of academic subjects and extracurricular activities, leading to GCSE/IGCSE examinations in Year 11. In the Sixth Form, students have academic or
vocational pathways: through extensive subject options in the International Baccalaureate Diploma or the BTEC Diploma (although this is being discontinued from September 2019 to focus solely on the IB). Each pathway
leads to some impressive university entry options.

The school firmly believes in a broad curriculum. To this end, it is committed to offering learning opportunities outside of the classroom, to take advantage of its excellent facilities. There is a thriving sports programme, an extensive
schedule of peripatetic music lessons, as well as a broad range of extra-curricular activities, such as the Duke of Edinburgh International Award and Model United Nations. Students play an active role in a revived House system
through a range of activities and competitions. The positive values promoted at BISC enhance family and community relationships and develop international perspective.

BISC was the first school in Egypt to be inspected by the ISI, most recently in February 2015, and the first to have been accredited by the IAPS. The school achieved ‘excellent’ in all aspects in its last ISI inspection. The School should undergo inspection by a DfE accredited inspectorate during the 2019-2020 academic year.

BISC is governed by a Board of Directors who determine the aims and overall conduct of the School. In conjunction with the Principal, it sets and reviews the policies, plans and procedures that will ensure the best possible education
for present and future pupils. The School is a not-for-profit school with charitable status. It is owned by a perpetual trust of current parents who are members of The British International School Society (BISS). Board members are elected by and responsible to the BISS in accordance with its constitution. Communication with parents occurs via the AGM, direct bulletins, and through a dedicated email address.

The Board of Directors of The British International School, Cairo is currently seeking to appoint a dynamic and inspirational school leader to become its new Principal from August 2019. The successful candidate will take on a thriving school with a strong student roll, solid academic results and a superb teaching and support staff.

BISC was established in 1976 and has a reputation as one of the most successful schools in the Middle East. We teach boys and girls aged 2-18, with the majority of our students from Egypt, and our school's mission is to be a vibrant international community that promotes independent learning to develop global citizens.

We are based on a purpose built, state-of-the-art campus, 30 minutes West of the city centre. We are surrounded by high quality housing and facilities, though the hustle and bustle of downtown Cairo - and the pyramids - are not far away and easily accessible.

We follow the British curriculum, with a track record of academic success as well as a strong focus on pastoral care. We are an active IB World School, a member of COBIS and BSME, and thus the school provides a holistic education in a supportive and caring environment. We are a non-denominational school, and we welcome students from all faiths and traditions, embracing the principles of open-mindedness and understanding.

BISC is a large school with over 1,150 students across our Foundation Stage, Junior and Senior Schools. Up to Key Stage 3, we follow the EYFS leading to the National Curriculum for England, with modifications to reflect the particular geographical and cultural circumstances of Egypt. In the Junior School, teachers receive specialist support in a variety of subjects and all classes have a bilingual Teaching Assistant to support the class teacher. With the exception of Arabic, all classes are in English, which many children speak at home, and children make excellent progress in their language development. The School takes advantage of the history, culture and geography of Egypt through a range of offsite trips and activities.

At Key Stage 4, students are prepared for GCSE and IGCSE examinations with the majority of students choosing to study the full IB Diploma. Our results are above the global average and the majority of our students go on to attend universities in the UK and USA.

Our package for teachers is amongst the best in the world, with tax-free salaries paid in Pound Sterling. Each teacher receives a generous housing allowance, as well as free annual return flights, BUPA gold healthcare, and a large budget for CLD. Above all we offer a friendly and supportive environment for you to grow as a professional with like-minded professionals.

Finally, further details of our school can be found on the school's website, but if you have any queries please contact the Human Resources Department by email, using hr@bisc.edu.eg.

We look forward to hearing from you.
