Job overview

This is an exceptional opportunity to lead a very large 11 – 19 Academy in an idyllic location. The College is the only secondary phase provider in the town of Exmouth, with a population of circa 35,000, situated in East Devon. This year sees the opening of two major new buildings on our site as part of a £17 million investment programme which provides superb new classrooms, theatre and a library, and will be completed by September 2023.

The current Principal is retiring from headship after six years at the College, a period during which he has led much needed major transformation. Within two months of him taking up post in 2017, the College received a Requires Improvement judgement from OFSTED which highlighted that significant changes needed to take place to improve the quality of education at the College. Whilst still judged to be Requires Improvement in 2020, during their visit and subsequent monitoring visits in 2021, OFSTED recognised the scope of the change that has already taken place and we are seeking a new Principal who has the vision and commitment to build on these solid foundations.

We would expect applicants to have successful experience of headship already. For those who wish to relocate, East Devon is an area of outstanding natural beauty, with wonderful leisure and recreational facilities and a pleasant climate. There are good road and rail connections to other parts of the UK.

A new chapter is about to begin for Exmouth Community College; if you think you are the person to lead the College through to the next stage of its development, please complete the Principal Application Form and return this to recruitment@exmouthcollege.devon.sch.uk by 10am on the closing date.

We would strongly encourage you to book into one of the College tours, by contacting Gill Morgan, HR Manager, on 01395 255 666 or gillian.morgan@exmouthcollege.devon.sch.uk We think that, if you do, you will really understand and be excited by the opportunities we have to offer.

About Exmouth Community College

Exmouth Community College is one of the largest secondary schools in the country with over 2,200 students currently enrolled (over 300 of these in Post 16). The College, which converted to Academy status in April 2011, is set in a leafy split-site location.  Our catchment area extends northwards towards Exeter city and eastwards to include Budleigh Salterton and many attractive rural villages.  The College embraces working as part of the community and has strong local partnerships.

Our mission is to provide a well-structured, enjoyable, and positive approach to learning that rewards student success and allows for individual aptitudes to flourish. We pride ourselves on being an inclusive College that caters to all abilities.

Our College provides a safe, secure, and non-threatening environment in which students can develop consideration for others, self-discipline and positive relationships. We strive to offer an education that prepares students for their future.

The Exmouth Community College Trust is overseen by the Governing Board who are committed to delivering the best comprehensive education for the young people of Exmouth and the surrounding villages.

We put the development of staff at the centre of our philosophy, including a unique Assistant Headteacher role with responsibility for our staff and their development. We take it really seriously, and very much subscribe to Richard Branson's mantra to develop our staff well enough so they can leave but treat them well enough so they don't want to.

There is a really strong sense of community at ECC. Through us all working together as staff, families and governors, and pulling together as one community, we will continue the great work to build a College that caters brilliantly for its community and prepares our young people for their future.

Exmouth Community College is a fully comprehensive academy committed to giving the best education and opportunities to all of our students. We invite you to explore our website to find out more about our College.
