Job overview

The John Roan School is part of United Learning, a successful national group of academies and independent schools. The John Roan School is brimming with potential. The position provides a genuinely exciting opportunity to lead a school with a legacy of a ‘Serious Weaknesses’ Ofsted Judgement (2018) in its next phase of school improvement as it moves towards excellence.

The John Roan School has a long and distinguished history of educating the young people of Greenwich, since its founding in 1677. Today the school remains at the heart of the community, and since joining United Learning in 2019, the school has developed a strong curriculum, good teaching and effective pupil support.

We are looking for a leader who is aligned to our values outlined in ‘The United Learning Way’ and who will accelerate the schools’ journey to excellence, in line with our Framework for Excellence: promoting the best in everyone; powerful knowledge; education with character; leadership in every role; and continuous improvement.

The position is an exciting opportunity for someone who believes that extraordinary academic success is possible. We are looking for a leader with a clear vision, the focus to drive improvement at pace and shares the Trust’s determination to do their best for young people. The position is a great match for someone with the highest expectations, determination, resilience, audacity and compassion in equal measure. Above all, we are seeking substantial and sustainable improvements under the leadership of a Principal committed to the long-term success of The John Roan School’s pupils and community.

The school is also part of a cluster with two other Southeast London UL schools, Bacon’s College, in Southwark and Sedgehill Academy, in Lewisham. Our cluster model provides wider opportunities for both staff and students to work collaboratively. The school has over a thousand pupils in Year 7 to 13 and is located across two adjacent school sites, very close to Greenwich Park. Westcombe Park is a state-of-the-art school building with excellent facilities, that is home to Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils, whilst the Grade II listed Maze Hill site offers the Sixth Form, their own space to flourish. The school is very fortunate to continue to benefit from the support of The John Roan Foundation who donate funding to provide unique opportunities for pupils at the school.

United Learning values diversity and inclusion and is committed to creating and sustaining a more ethnically diverse workforce. In this regard we would not only welcome applications from professionals of minority ethnic origin, but from majority ethnic professionals who share our commitment.

If you are looking for an exciting and highly rewarding role within a Group that offers excellent professional development and if you have a strong commitment to improving the lives of all young people, we encourage you to visit us.
