Job overview

Relocation assistance available.

Reports to: Regional Director of Secondary

Ark is an international charity that is transforming lives through education. We exist to make sure that every child, regardless of background, has access to a great education and real choices in life.

Our highly-successful network of 34 schools educates over 20,000 students across Hastings, Birmingham, London and Portsmouth. They are achieving some of the best results in the country despite being largely in areas of historic academic underachievement.

Helenswood School, an all-girls school in Hastings, joined Ark in September 2013 as Helenswood Academy. Since that time staff have done a great job in building a strong platform for learning – students are empowered to excel academically, have the self-confidence to realise their aspirations and be outstanding members of the community. The school has much to be proud of – Ark Helenswood has the best GCSE results in Hastings. With a good momentum for progress and big ambitions for the future, Ark Helenswood is poised to achieve great things.

Our current Headteacher is relocating as part of a family move and we will be very sorry to see her go – she has done a truly great job of leading the school over the last seven years.

The road ahead will be challenging, but we have seen what can be achieved with hard work… which is where you come in.

We are now looking to appoint a dynamic and inspirational senior leader who shares our high expectations and who has exceptional drive, creativity and tenacity to lead the school on its journey to outstanding. You’ll bring a clear vision of what excellent education looks like and you’ll be passionate about coaching others and using innovation to achieve it – utilising your outstanding pedagogy to ensure consistently high standards of teaching and learning and your flair for developing talent will support a culture of aspiration and continuous improvement. You will work closely with our Regional Director and the Principal of Ark William Parker (the all-boys partner school) to share best practice and develop a secondary offer that is compelling and distinctive, drives student numbers and supports community transformation.

To be successful, you’ll need a track record of continuous improvement, ideally within a complex environment, coupled with a flair for building capacity through coaching, challenge and support. Your experience in community engagement will be a real asset to Ark Helenswood as you act as an influential advocate to strengthen our profile with local schools, stakeholders and the community we are so proud to serve. Whether you’re a serving Headteacher looking for a new challenge or an ambitious Deputy ready for Headship - we really want to hear from you.

In return you’ll receive unrivalled professional development and the support of the Ark team who will do whatever it takes to support Ark Helenswood to be the very best it can be.

For an informal conversation, please contact Ark’s Head of Principal Recruitment, Corrina O’Beirne, on 0203 116 6310 or Corrina.O’Beirne@arkonline.org. The closing date for applications is Thursday 5th May.

Please submit your current CV at http://bit.ly/214CmAz and include a supporting statement that outlines how your experience to date prepares you to take on this role.

Deadline: 10am Thursday 5th May 2016
Interviews: Assessment centre in Hastings on Tuesday 10th May, final interviews in London on Thursday 19th May

Ofsted report

“Many middle leaders have welcomed the culture shift generated by Ark and the Principal since the start of this academic year. They know that they must be the driving force for change. Practically all middle leaders have risen to the challenge enthusiastically. Staff responses to the questionnaire reflected increasing confidence combined with realism about issues such as behaviour. The academy has wisely and successfully adopted many of the Ark programmes to develop staff’s skills."
