Job overview

Founded in 1952 as a primary school to serve the children of the British Military based in Amman, ICS today is proud to be one of the longest-established, and most international, international schools in the region. Inspired by their patrons, HRH Prince El Hasan bin Talal and HRH Princess Sarvath El Hassan, their roots are very much in Jordanian soil, but their outlook is unashamedly global. With over 70% of its 700+ students from a diverse range of nationalities, cultures, religions and worldviews, the school is proud to be able to offer "the world in one classroom".

ICS is a school with a big heart, and almost everyone who visits mentions the atmosphere of warmth and kindness, which is palpable among the students and staff. Set in an area of natural beauty between downtown Amman and the city’s airport, ICS is a non-proprietary and non-profit organisation, with all income used to benefit the students and their education. ICS also places a great deal of emphasis on the health, safety and wellbeing of the children in their care, with a strong pastoral programme growing independence, resilience and selfesteem, and students encouraged to view ‘failure’ as one of the necessary steps to success. The school places a premium on providing a warm and caring emotional and physical environment where children feel safe, valued and respected, and the school's values infuse every area of policy and practice.

ICS is also the home of #themonalisaeffect, their unique, data-led and data-fed brand of personalised learning, which ensure that the entire learning and wellbeing experience is tailored to the strengths and needs of each individual student. Their innovative, #earlyyearsup approach to curriculum also aims to keep a 'candle of curiosity' burning brightly across the age and ability range, and their success in Community Service and Social Advocacy has long been a hallmark of the school. In addition, inclusivity is enshrined in all they do, and they are proud to be able to meet the needs of a wide spectrum of ability and need, from the most able Oxbridge or Ivy League aspirant to students with mild to moderate needs or difficulties, and everyone in between. Put simply, at ICS, every child can succeed and be happy.

The Board of Governors is currently seeking to appoint an experienced, inspirational and dynamic new Principal to continue the work of their existing Principal, Matthew Savage, who will return to the UK in August 2020 after four years of exceptional service. This is a unique opportunity to join a truly inspirational school.

About International Community School, Amman, Jordan

The International Community School, Amman, is a school with a bold vision and a big heart.  We won the 2020 International School Awards, received the 2019 GESS Community Award for Citizenship, and became the first international school in the world to be awarded the Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM). One of the most international of international schools in the Middle East, ICS is proud to offer ‘the world in one classroom', and, through its determination that all stakeholders make an impact in everything they do, adopts a trailblazing determination to engage with and serve its local, regional and global community. Fully accredited by CIS and BSO, and a full member of BSME and COBIS, ICS identifies and hybridises the very best of global pedagogy and practice, and aims, at all times, to do things differently and well.

The school is located on a purpose-built, modern campus, surrounded by the hills and fields of rural Na’our but only a short drive from the life and energy of suburban and urban Amman. The campus boasts the full selection of attractive and specialist facilities demanded by the 21st Century, British curriculum the school provides. Meanwhile, work continues on an exciting campus development. A new "double size" sports hall has now been completed and construction of a Swimming Pool complex, Performing Arts Centre and other campus upgrades are planned over the coming years.  The school follows a modified version of the Early Years Framework and the National Curriculum for England and Wales, adapted to the school’s international and local context. Year 11 and Year 13 students sit IGCSEs and A Levels, prior to applying to some of the best universities in the world. In 2022 the school celebrated its best GCSE and A level results in the school's 69 year history.

As a not-for-profit school accountable to the very community it serves, it is able to sustain a constant and authentic orbit around the individual child at all times. A pioneer by nature, the school encourages both staff and students to enjoy the space to create, innovate and take risks. We are proud to be genuinely inclusive, both on admission and through curriculum, learning and teaching, and are able to cater for the needs of a diverse student cohort of over 700 students, from the most able Oxbridge or Ivy League aspirant to children with mild to moderate SEND, not to mention a growing group of students at an early stage of their English language acquisition.

In 2023 the school is celebrating its 70th Anniversary and with campus development, an ever evolving curriculum offer and a dynamic, innovative approach to all we do ICS is an exciting and fulfilling place to work.

Perched 1000m above the timeless, mystical Dead Sea, Amman is one of the hidden gems of the region - a modern, cosmopolitan city, with a vibrant life both night and day, and a diverse, international population. One of the most welcoming countries in the world, Jordan provides a safe and family-friendly environment, rooted in foundations more ancient than anywhere else on the planet, but with an influence and outlook that belie its small size, not to mention an outstanding cuisine which will never disappoint. An outdoor enthusiast’s playground, Jordan prides itself on a rich array of global wonders, from historic Petra to the deserts of Wadi Rum, and from the forested hills of Ajloun to the teeming reefs of the Red Sea. Whilst Amman enjoys four seasons, with snow and ice not uncommon each winter, its 310 days of sunshine every year have an inevitable effect on the wellbeing of its citizens, whose warmth has welcomed the displaced and the relocated from around the region and the world for over 100 years.

ICS offers a highly competitive package, including:

  • A generous, tax-free salary for the duration of a two-year contract;
  • A comprehensive programme of Continuous Professional Learning;
