Job overview

Ellesmere College is a dynamic, ambitious and caring school with 270 children and young people aged 4 -19 on roll with a range of complex learning needs, cognition and learning, communication and interaction and sensory needs. It is situated in a new, purpose built building which provides a bright, motivational learning environment and is only 2 minutes from junction 21 of the M1 making it highly accessible from a wide area.

In recent years the college has had two consecutive good Ofsted’s, moved into the new building, re-defined the pupil admission criteria to include 4-11 year olds and has established itself as a centre of excellence for the work that it does in meeting the complex needs of the students. This has been achieved without losing the inclusive, friendly and approachable ethos that is its hallmark. Governors are seeking to appoint a new Principal with the determination to build on the college’s many strengths and ensure it consistently provides outstanding outcomes for all of its children and young people.

The next few years promise to be just as dynamic and exciting for the college and the new Principal. Much of this will be driven by the need to adapt to the changing profile of pupils being admitted, while also embedding and extending the excellent work that the college currently does as it works towards a realistic ambition of being recognised by Ofsted as Outstanding. The college has a strong reputation and is ready to become more outward facing and share its journey with others. The person appointed will need to have the vision to see the college’s role within the wider community and the energy and personality to forge new partnerships in order to provide the range of learning experiences that the pupils and young people so richly deserve. The opportunities and challenges facing the college are exciting and the rewards of a job well done are limitless.

At the heart of the college is a committed and talented staff who are focused on embedding best practice and providing consistently high quality teaching and learning where all children and young people are challenged to achieve their potential and where everyone makes the best progress at all times. Staff value their own professional development and are motivated to be a part of the college’s continuing development and success.

If you have an outstanding track record as a senior leader in education and previous experience in a SEND setting, together with the determination to maximise the opportunities available then this role offers an excellent opportunity to challenge yourself in a new environment. Applicants must be committed to high quality teaching and learning and should have the creativity and vision to inspire and lead change but also the focus to ensure successful outcomes are reached. You will need a ‘can-do’ attitude that can inspire and engage students, parents/carers, staff and the local community. The role needs a compassionate and strong leader who can hold staff to account whilst being accountable yourself. You must be confident and positive and have the skills to build relationships with a wide variety of external partners. Above all, you will ensure that children and young people, their learning and developing their potential, remains at the heart of all decisions.
