Job overview

With a remarkable history stretching back to the 15th century, Skegness Grammar School is one of the longest established grammars in the UK. We’re incredibly proud of our school, its students and staff, and we are determined to continue our current rapid transformation and improvement. The whole school has made great strides under the capable direction of our interim leader, and our next Principal will therefore find a very sound set of foundations on which to build. Nevertheless, we are not complacent about the need to focus on enabling all pupils (including the most able) to be able to realise their full potential – both as learners, and as young people.

The strongest candidates will bring a rare combination of experience and vision: the experience to continue our trajectory of achievement and attainment, and the vision to maintain our unique position as a grammar school with a boarding house. We want to hear from leaders who have worked in improving schools, but who also understand the great importance of high-quality, nurturing boarding provision to parents who are based both in the UK and overseas.

There’s no question that you will need a quiet resilience, a clear picture of what good looks like, and the interpersonal skills to engage with the whole school community. But the rewards for success will be considerable, both within the David Ross Education Trust and beyond; and we expect that this opportunity will attract the very top cohort of aspiring Principals. The David Ross Education Trust, of which this academy is a part, is committed to investing in the ongoing professional development of staff and to providing career progression opportunities. These are supported through the academy regional hubs of education excellence, as well as its relationships with outstanding external partners, including the National College, Future Leaders and Teach First.

About Skegness Grammar School

Located in Skegness, Lincolnshire, The Skegness Grammar School is a co-educational grammar school. First opened in 1483 by the founder of Magdalen College Oxford, William de Waynflete, the school has operated on its current site since 1933. After spending some time as a grant-maintained school, it converted to academy status in 2012, and is under the sponsorship of the David Ross Education Trust, a multi-academy group responsible for the running of a number of schools across the country. The school is smaller than average, with around 650 students.

As a grammar school, admission to Skegness is selective on the basis of academic achievement, with an entrance examination being required of students in order to gain admission. While the school sixth form is mostly made up of students from the lower school, around 25 places are available for students from other schools, with admission being made here based on school reports and GCSE results. Our sixth form cohort averages at around 130 students.

“Leaders, staff and those responsible for governance work together effectively, with a common purpose to keep improving all aspects of the school.”

“Pupils are polite and courteous to each other and adults. They know how to behave well and understand why good behaviour is important.
