Job overview

Scotch College is one of the leading independent day and boarding schools in Australia. Founded in 1851, it has a rich history of providing an education for boys, underpinned by timeless Christian values and a spirit of excellence which anchors its educational leadership and impressive academic record.

On a single campus in Melbourne, Australia, the School serves 1,890 boys – 430 in Junior School (Years Prep-6) and 1,460 in Senior School (Years 7-12), including 160 boarders, mainly from rural Australia and overseas.  A committed and dedicated staff numbering over 500 support and encourage each boy to achieve the highest standard of which he is capable in all his activities. Development of character, a sense of responsibility and respect for others prepares him for the world, and a greater purpose in whatever field he pursues.

Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church of Victoria, the School’s Scottish ideals of egalitarianism, service and excellence are embodied in a culture that encourages innovation, a spirit of enquiry and independent thought.  State-of-the-art facilities, modern technology, extensive sports amenities, a dynamic arts and music hub and an extensive co-curricular program engage all of the boys, within the broader ‘Scotch Family’ of staff, parents and alumni.

Scotch College is seeking to appoint its 10th Principal in 170 years, as the current Principal, Mr Tom Batty, who came to Scotch College from Eton, will return to England in 2022 following 14 years of outstanding service.  The new appointee has the opportunity to have a significant impact on not only the boys and the extended School community but also, more broadly, education in Australia and internationally.

It is a requirement that the appointee be a confirmed member of a Protestant Church.

Some of the qualities and experience being sought in the Principal are:

• A passionate, energetic and creative educator who values and reinforces the School’s strong foundations of Christian belief, tradition, and values.

• A commitment to modelling servant leadership – seeing the role as a way to serve the community rather than just a job.

• Proven expertise in building and developing a successful and harmonious team, both academic and non-academic, ensuring pathways for development of staff to maximise their potential.

• An excellent verbal and written communicator, able to build support and instil confidence across the School community, and represent the School in multiple arenas, including government and media.

• Preferred Principal experience, or at a minimum a Vice Principal or a very senior school leadership role.

Applicants must be, or be eligible to be, a citizen or permanent resident of Australia, or demonstrate a capability to obtain a medium to long term visa. Scotch College would expect to assist in the process of obtaining a visa etc if required. The Australian Government’s Global Talent Visa program, also known as the Global Talent Independent Program, is a streamlined visa pathway for highly skilled professionals to work and live permanently in Australia. Australia is seeking the brightest and best global talent to work in ten future-focused sectors, including education. Further details are at:
