Job overview

Havelock Academy has nearly 1,000 pupils aged 11-18.  The Academy has a distinguished history, serving generations of students as a grammar school, a comprehensive and now as an academy.  Since it opened, attendance at the academy has improved to 95% and GCSE rates have increased from 23% (A* - C including maths and English) to just under 50%.

Enrichment is a key component of academy life and over the last couple of terms the academy has welcomed Olympic athletes to help teach sport, the students have had books published on the area’s local history and there have even been themed banquets to help students live healthier lives. The academy has moved into an £18 million new build.

We are looking for an outstanding educator and leader to take forward our vision of exceptional education, learning and growth for the young people and the community we serve.

This is an exciting and rewarding role, in a school that embraces our Trust’s ethos of opening our students’ eyes to the world around them. You’ll build on our achievements to date, working to realise our objectives and embed a positive culture of curiosity, commitment and accountability.

Thank you for taking the time to consider how you can make a difference to our students’ lives as Principal of Havelock Academy

Who we are looking for…

This is a fantastic and highly rewarding leadership role for the right candidate.

It’s a role that demands exceptional capability and character to drive sustainable improvements in our school’s rich and fertile learning environment.

As a Trust we have taken rapid steps to drive improvements, led by our experienced and talented Senior Leadership Team.  We would look to you to develop the annual strategic plan to drive improvements through delivery of a knowledge-rich curriculum and a warm:strict approach to behaviour management.

We want our students to benefit from a rigorous and academic diet, based on your leadership of curriculum development which challenges them from year 7 and builds on their schema in a logical and coherent narrative to year 13.

You’ll be an experienced secondary school principal who has a vision, leadership skills and creativity to get Havelock Academy on a path to “Outstanding” quickly and sustainably. You’ll coach and develop our talented teaching staff and be an incredible, hands-on ambassador in the local community too.

For the right candidate, this could well be the role you are looking for.

You’ll also share our ambition for Havelock too - we want to be amongst the top performing secondary schools in Grimsby and become the school of choice in the local community. You can count on having our Trust’s full support to make this happen.

Why join Havelock Academy?

If you are ambitious, inspirational, creative, open-minded and want to help shape our success, we want to hear from you.

The strongest candidates will bring a combination of experience and vision and the experience to continue our trajectory of achievement and attainment. You will need strong interpersonal skills to engage with the whole school community.

Providing a world-class education and enrichment experiences for our young people is what drives us. Our students benefit from a wealth of opportunities to develop, learn and lead. From the classroom, to cultural visits, sports, music and arts and engaging with our local communities, the rich and varied experiences we create help fuel ambition and unlock potential. The education and experiences equip our young people with the leadership skills, team spirit, resilience and confidence to become outstanding citizens.

We work alongside outstanding organisations and individuals who are happy to share their expertise and skills in supporting the Trust’s vision, to give children better life chances through access to the best education and support we can give them.

Apply now by completing our application form on our website.  Please note that we cannot accept CVs without a completed form. Should you like further information please contact Recruitment@dret.co.uk.

Closing date is 5pm on Tuesday 23rd April 2019.

Interviews will be in two stages - day one on Thursday 25th April and, for those put forward, day two on Friday 26th April 2019.

Havelock Academy is committed to equality, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. An enhanced DBS check is required for all successful applicants.

About Havelock Academy

Located in the town of Grimsby, Lincolnshire, Havelock Academy is a co-educational secondary school. Havelock has around 1000 pupils aged 11-18, making it slightly larger than the average secondary school. The school has an economically diverse catchment area, a fact reflected in its student intake. Originally known as Havelock school, it was established in the 1960s, adopting its current name in 2007 upon its conversion to an academy. The school is part of the David Ross Education Trust, a multi-academy trust responsible for a large number of schools across the Midlands and the north of England.

Ofsted

“Students’ personal development is promoted well throughout the curriculum. Students appreciate the extra time their teachers and other adults are giving to help them do better. This is ensuring students are doing well. Students’ behaviour is good and they are keen to learn. This makes a strong contribution to their good progress.”
