The Vacancy

Thank you very much for your interest in becoming Principal of The Cornerstone Academy.

The Cornerstone Academy is a Secondary Academy serving the local families of Hamworthy, Poole. It is a growing 11-16 secondary school at the heart of its local community. Leaders have created an inclusive school environment, with a strong focus on personal development, Education with Character, and academic success.

The new leader will inherit the academy at an exciting time in its history. Educationally, the school has strong foundations in place, with a broad and ambitious curriculum and high-quality teaching that meets the needs of all pupils. The school achieved its highest Progress 8 to date, at +0.78 last summer.

Physically, a recent expansion project has provided new facilities and allowed the school’s capacity to increase by 300 places in state-of-the-art classrooms. Within the community, Cornerstone is increasingly a school of choice for local families and, as a result, is rapidly growing.

The successes of the school are underpinned by a values-led approach, that is evident within the classroom and beyond - with good behaviour, respectful relationships, and pupils enjoying their learning. The incoming Principal will have the vision to see this as a school brimming with potential, and they will have the commitment and empathy to bring pupils, parents, staff and the wider community with them, as they strive to make the academy truly exceptional. They will be committed to the highest standards and expectations for all pupils, including and especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The Cornerstone Academy is part of United Learning. We are a big group of schools – with over 60,000 pupils and more than 9,000 staff – so we have the capacity to support you educationally and operationally. At the same time, we are values led and base all that we do on good relationships, so you will be joining a big family.

Reporting directly to the Regional Director, you will be supported both personally and professionally, benefitting from the strength of a national group who will support your development and that of your staff and school.

We are committed to fairness, diversity and inclusion. We are currently working hard to improve representation of black, Asian and minority ethnic leaders at headship level and to raise our proportion of women leaders to match their representation in our wider workforce. Whoever you are, if you have a strong track record of improving young people’s education and a drive to do more, we very much look forward to hearing from you.

United Learning are working in partnership with Propelo to recruit for this position. If you would like to arrange a visit or set up a confidential conversation please contact Propelo on 01273 222 877 or email unitedlearning@propelo.co.uk

United Learning

We are part of United Learning, a large, and growing, group of schools aiming to offer a life changing education to children and young people across England.

Our schools work as a team and achieve more by sharing than any single school could. Our subject specialists, our Group-wide intranet, our own curriculum and our online learning portal all help us share knowledge and resource, helping to simplify work processes and manage workloads for an improved work-life balance.

As a Group, we can reward our staff better with good career opportunities, better pay, benefits and ultimately, the satisfaction of helping children to succeed. We invest in our staff wellbeing. Our academies each have at least eight INSET days per year (with three of those solely dedicated to planning), and an ongoing group-wide wellbeing programme. It's an ethos we call ‘the best in everyone’.

We are working hard to become a more diverse organisation – which is key to our commitment to bringing out the best in everyone. We welcome applications from everyone committed to this ethos and would particularly welcome applications from black and minority ethnic candidates, who are currently under-represented in the Group as a whole. We always appoint on merit. We are open to discussing flexible working options.
