Job overview

Rochdale Sixth Form College is searching for its next Principal: a values-driven individual that can build on the genuine passion, ambition and care that has led to the college being named Sixth Form College of the Year, 2021.

The result of a unique partnership between local schools and the FE College, Rochdale Sixth Form College was created to be a place for outstanding and aspirational A Level education for the borough of Rochdale.

Now, over a decade later, and as part of Altus Education Partnership, the college continues to excel. With 90% of our students living or having attended a school within the Rochdale local authority, the role we play in supporting and enabling local young people to shape their futures is clear; but it goes further still. More recent growth means that Rochdale Sixth Form College is no longer a college just for Rochdale but a college for surrounding communities and an integral part of the local region.

It is not just the local context in which we play an important role. On a national basis, Rochdale Sixth Form College is seen as a sector leader and as one of the best Sixth Form Colleges in the country for student progress, and we have a national reputation for excellence. We are very proud of this reputation, one which we hope to build on with the appointment of a new College Principal.

With current Principal Richard Ronksley now stepping up to the role of CEO to oversee the leadership of the Trust as a whole,  the college now looks to the future, and our new Principal will find an opportunity to take up leadership of a college that is already built on very strong foundations. This opportunity represents a chance to lead a great college and make it even greater.

Who we’re looking for

To support the college through our next stage of development, Altus Education Partnership is looking to appoint a new Principal to lead the college into the future.

We are hoping to find an individual with significant leadership experience gained in a post-16 or secondary education environment who understands what is required to drive forward an organisation which is already considered a sector leader. This is a role which will require a significant understanding of how a college such as Rochdale Sixth Form can best serve its local area, both as an education partner and as a  key community leader.

The postholder shouldn’t just have experience of Sixth Form education – they should have a genuine passion for it. Along with this, and despite the college having already been outstanding in so many ways, candidates will need to be able to demonstrate their expertise in quality improvement, curriculum development and management reporting, ensuring the college never stands still and continues to improve.

The student experience is of paramount importance to us, and so the postholder will need to be able to interpret data and use information to plan improvements, allowing our students to make the relevant improvements to continually enhance their experience at every opportunity.

Our wider aim of delivering an outstanding education for Rochdale and the broader community is a constant driver for us, and so all strategies and related delivery will need to be considered within the context of our local area and the needs of the communities we serve.

Finally, our new Principal should be a person who truly wants to develop and support young people using their leadership skills, knowledge of the sector and an ambition to help all young people achieve their personal goals.

About Rochdale Sixth Form College

The College opened in September 2010 as the newest sixth form college in the UK and the first to be built since 2004. With world class facilities, the £26 million College is purpose built and currently accommodates circa. 1650 students

The college has had a transformative impact on young people’s lives and life chances. In 2013 Ofsted graded us ‘outstanding’; at the time we were only the second sixth form college to have gained this accolade. Additionally, we have been the highest performing sixth form college in the Department for Education’s performance tables on five separate occasions, most recently in 2017/18.

The College was set up to address the A Level underachievement in the Borough. Prior to 2010 the A Level performance in Rochdale was poor and had very low progression rates to HE.

The College is committed to inclusive entry requirements and achieves extremely good value added scores as evidenced in Performance Tables and the ALPs scores. The College has excellent retention rates and average attendance is just over 95%.

The curriculum at the College is A Level focused with a small number of students following a mixed programme of a BTEC Sub Diploma alongside one A Level. Students who are yet to achieve a pass at Grade 4 or above in GCSE Maths and English are required to resit until they secure the required grade.

Given the prior attainment level of RSFC students, it is a huge strength of the College that we achieve excellent progression rates to higher education. The whole RSFC project has been a wonderful advert for social mobility. Students apply across the board to Oxford and Cambridge, Russell Group and the wider group of HE providers.

The College works with students not applying to HE to ensure they have the opportunity to progress on to appropriate apprenticeships and employment opportunities.

RSFC has very strong working relationships with local schools and the local GFE provider. The College Principal/CEO sits on the Pioneers Trust with local secondary headteachers and the College is also a key member of NWSFC (North West Sixth Form College group); SFCA (Sixth Form College Association) and the AOC (Association of Colleges).

The College estate is in outstanding condition and there has been significant investment in capital works to create an outstanding physical learning environment and student facilities. The financial health of the College is rated as outstanding.

We have a clear mission and central purpose to help students realise their academic potential. The College believes that every young person has it within themselves to succeed and will devote itself to improving student achievement. The College is an inclusive Sixth Form College. The students at RSFC study in a highly positive environment, and staff continuously build self-confidence and self-belief in students. Aspirations for the trajectory of improvement are high and the College focuses upon creating happy and successful students. The College has high expectations of students and staff. The drive is for the quality of teaching to be outstanding day in and day out, together with a support and guidance structure that powerfully focuses upon the individual student.
