Job overview

Tower College is based in Rainhill, Merseyside, ideally located with easy access to the M62 /M6 / M57 motorway network.

The school is housed in a spacious C19 mansion built to take in the magnificent views from the escarpment over the Mersey Valley to Runcorn, Cheshire and the Welsh mountains. The Tower is a house not long built when purchased by Henry Baxter, a Widnes chemical manufacturer, and extended in 1879-80 for him by Edmund Kirby. The earlier part is rambling, free Jacobethan, and of two storeys. Kirby’s changes are much more capably detailed. Chief amongst them, in matching quarry-faced stone, is the extraordinary tower. Massive, of four storeys, with pairs of two-storey oriels, diagonal buttresses, and battlements, from which rise tall chimneys and in one corner a turret surmounted by a fairytale cupola.

On the ground floor the Tower has a library, fully panelled in a dense, free style. Kirby also added more, and more correct, mullioned-and-transomed windows to the existing house to light remodelled interiors: on the garden side two to his dining room, and on the entrance side a tall bay housing a staircase.

The extensive grounds are beautiful and are fully utilised by the children in their many activities from sports to butterfly hatching. Modern buildings have been added as the school has grown and the facilities for all subjects are first class.

The Tower was purchased by the late Charles and Muriel Oxley to open Tower College in April 1948. Their aims were for high academic, sporting and musical achievements in a caring, family environment. The school is non-denominational Christian, welcoming families of all faiths, or none, and all ethnicities , backgrounds and orientations.

The current Principal, Miss Rachel Oxley, daughter of the school's founders, retires in August 2018 after 38 years (25 as Principal) of distinguished service to Christian Schools Limited.

Pupil numbers throughout the school are consistently strong, with waiting lists for Tower Tots nursery and several year groups. The staff all volunteer to run a wide range of enrichment and extra-curricular activities and the very enthusiastic events co-ordinator runs several residential trips throughout the year to Manor Adventure, History trips to the Battlefields and the annual ski-trip to Italy.

The highly qualified team in the Special Needs Department ensure that children of all needs fulfil their individual potentials. This is largely due to a highly dedicated staff who are always prepared to 'go the extra mile'.

Despite being non-selective, the school's GCSE results are excellent and Tower College frequently occupies the top place in the GCSE League Table for schools in the North West - both State and Independent.

We are seeking a Principal who has the empathy, energy and drive to care for the Tower College Family, and to lead and support staff and pupils alike in the next phase of Tower College's life.

The post of Principal comes with an attractive and competitive salary along with access to the National Teachers’ Pension Scheme and other benefits. As a day school, no accommodation is offered, however, Governors will consider assisting with relocation expenses for the successful candidate.

For an informal discussion or for an application form, please contact Miss R J Oxley at missoxley@towercollege.com or on 0151 426 4333 See www.towercollege.com for information about the school.

Closing date: Friday 3rd November 2017, noon.
Interviews: Wednesday 8th November 2017

We are committed to safeguarding and protecting the welfare of children and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. A Disclosure and Barring Service Certificate will be required for all posts. This post will be subject to enhanced checks as part of our Prevent duty.
