Job overview

The Student

The boy has been homeschooled for the last three years, following the British ISEB and AQA GCSE curricula. He has ADHD and dyslexia, which significantly affect his education. His general manner displays many of the associated symptoms such as difficulty in understanding instructions, and he struggled at school. He has a talent for foreign languages (French) and in this context is a good listener. He is also a good actor, and enjoys performing across the range of subjects.

The boy appreciates encouragement and positive, no-nonsense teaching methods. He enjoys practical, hands-on subjects like the sciences and technology lessons, and appreciates that he needs to be pushed in other subject areas to stay on topic. He is an able sportsman.

The Role of the Tutor

The boy has decided he would prefer to be in school now and has been accepted to a very good private prep school in the US system.  A Tutor, with the experience and subject breadth to support a student after school across the whole gamut of the standard US high school curriculum is therefore required.  Ideally the same tutor will be able to continue for the next four years. The Tutor must work to a high standard, keeping the student organized and ensuring that all work is completed on time, and that all tests and quizzes are fully prepped.  In addition to all of the normal subjects, it would be helpful if the Tutor can teach French, Spanish, and/or Latin.

The boy will be enrolled as a day student at a challenging local private high school. The Tutor will ensure his homework is completed to a high standard each night, and that he thoroughly understands everything taught that day. The Tutor must ensure that he is fully prepared for all future evaluations. Courses should be chosen to enable a range of university options.

The family travels often and has homes in Potomac, Aspen and the Bahamas. A designated schoolroom and science lab in Potomac are available for the Tutor, who is expected to assist in the purchase of supplies and resources.  The family also owns a large motor yacht, so the Tutor should be prepared to teach lessons in a variety of locations and while at sea. The Tutor should plan creative lessons and projects that take advantage of their locale, integrating classroom lessons with outdoor, hands on study and practical science or technology sessions in the appropriate location.

Competitive candidates will have graduated from an American high school with at least a 4.0 weighted GPA, and then graduated from a US News Top 25 Tier 1 Research University. It would be helpful if the Tutor achieved very high SAT or ACT scores and experience preparing students for these exams.

The Tutor must have experience with dyslexia and ADHD, but does not need a specialist qualification. They should be familiar with management techniques, such as Orton-Gillingham, and should use techniques such as the Davis Mastery programs for dyslexia, to help the student master trigger words. Technologies such as dictation or typing software should also be used where applicable. The Tutor must help the student develop lifelong techniques for managing his learning differences. The current Tutor has found using a light box for work particularly successful, enabling the student to concentrate on his studies for sustained periods.

The role will go to the best candidate regardless of age, gender or marital status.  The Tutor will be a non-smoker.  He or she will be active and able to play a range of sports with the boy. It would be helpful if they also enjoyed water and mountain sports, and know the rules of American football.

Hours and Holidays, Accommodation, Travel and Miscellaneous

This is a full-time position. The Tutor should expect to work with the student for at least 40 hours per week, plus prep time. The Tutor is entitled to two consecutive days off per week, (usually Fridays and Saturdays), but should be flexible to accommodate the Client’s needs. Advanced notice will be given where possible.

The Tutor is entitled to nine weeks paid vacation per annum, to be taken at times convenient for the Client.

Furnished accommodation will be provided in Potomac and Indiana. When travelling, the Client will cover all expenses for the Tutor and will arrange suitable accommodation. A car is provided throughout this contract.

The Tutor will be subject to extensive background screening, thorough confidentiality agreements, medical and drug use screening.
