Job overview

Students

The family, who are currently based in Milan, have four children. The three younger siblings are all enrolled at school and following a German curriculum. The eldest boy (15) is in school in Sweden. The focus of this search is for the third child in the family (8) who is in second grade. However, his sister (13) and younger brother (almost 4), will also require support outside of school. The youngest boy would also benefit from an early start with music.

The main focus will however be the support of the 8 year old. He is easily distracted and requires the attention of a positive teacher and mentor to motivate and teach in a fun, interactive and relaxed atmosphere, as well as to teach him take responsibility for his daily routine.

The young man needs a lot of support in writing and will require the help of someone who enjoys working with younger children and their shorter attention spans to address this. He equally struggles with maths but is highly cooperative and responds very well to positive reinforcement. He enjoys running, chess and is starting to learn the piano. He is starting to run competitively and needs support in this activity, including planning of opportunities to compete.

The older boy (15) is in 9th grade and is a competent, independent student who generally enjoys school. While he currently struggles to do all his academics in Swedish, he otherwise portrays no evident issues in his studies and works hard across the board. He displays an artistic flair, showing a strong appreciation of music and especially singing. He is eager to learn how to play the guitar.

A keen dancer and tennis player, the girl shares artistic interests with her elder brother and would like to take up sewing in the future. She is currently in 8th Grade and doing well at school. She mostly needs support on the sciences. She also runs a school newspaper. Someone who could help with proof reading in German and teach writing would be hugely appreciated.

The children all enjoy drawing and are interested in a range of sports, including tennis, skiing, ice skating and swimming. They would also like to continue to play chess and to explore various history topics in greater detail.

Role of the Tutor

The ideal Tutor for this role will boast a wealth of expertise across a wide spectrum of subjects and age ranges. He or she will need to plan their time efficiently to ensure a positive learning experience for all the children, whilst nurturing confidence and providing rewarding challenges. It is imperative to instil a general love of learning and to encourage independence and autonomy of private study as well.

The tutor will be responsible for ensuring the 8 year old boy is organised and prepared for school each day as well as helping him with his homework, as well as identifying opportunities for success experiences in sports. They will also need to focus on his number work and make sure any knowledge gaps and/or misconceptions are addressed.

His older sister (13) will likely require additional help with physics and would also benefit from more support with her German reading and writing skills.

Most importantly, the Tutor will need to be a fluent Italian speaker. They will need to focus on improving both the girl and the 8 year old boy's Italian language fluency. Currently, there are many languages spoken in the home, mostly German, English and Spanish, but no Italian. They have lived in Milan for almost two years but speak Italian very poorly. They will soon have to study in Italian - the German school only allows for two years of “phasing” into academics in Italian, and therefore they need to step up their game quickly. A daily routine entirely in Italian would therefore be of huge benefit.

Music – for the fun alone – should be a central skill of the Tutor. The eldest boy may also require support in the sciences during the holidays, as well as guitar lessons.

All three students should be encouraged to read and write more extensively, therefore, a well-read and passionate Tutor will serve as great inspiration to enthuse writing composition and foster a love of reading. They will discourage any and all screen time, limiting it only to necessary, educational purposes.

The Tutor must cater for all individual needs and meticulously plan and deliver bespoke material for each student. Through the promotion of enjoyment and success in learning, the children will become well-rounded individuals ready to cope with a range of situations in later life.

With four children and busy, demanding jobs, the family lead an eventful lifestyle, which can be hectic at times. However, an able Tutor will be able to plan autonomously and adapt accordingly, including when travelling, to optimise geographical locations and access to diverse resources.

Hours and Holidays, Accommodation and Travel

The Tutor should expect to work with the children for up to an average of 40 hours per week, with preparation in addition. Habitually, these hours have been afterschool, Monday-Thursday, with Friday and Saturday as the two designated days off per week. The tutor should then expect to be available between 10am and 6pm on Sundays and during school holidays. However, as always with a busy household, a willingness to be flexible is crucial.

The Tutor will be entitled to a minimum of 9 weeks holiday (45 working days) per year, to be taken during school holidays and at times agreed upon with the family. The Tutor will be flexible with respect to any changes in schedule, be they travel-related or otherwise and will adapt accordingly. The Client will strive to give up to two weeks’ notice of any planned alterations.

In addition to the tutoring fees, the Tutor will be given a stipend of €3000 per month and will make accommodation arrangements themselves in Milan. The stipend is sufficient to cover rent and all other bills on the Tutor’s accommodation. The Client is not responsible for the Tutor’s personal phone bills.

Miscellaneous

Joining a multilingual and culturally rich household, the successful candidate will be able to offer more than the minimum requirements of this position. They will uphold excellent academic standards, whilst providing a personable environment where learning and fun go hand in hand. They will be a positive role model and inspire the love of a range of subjects.

The Tutor must be a fit and healthy non-smoker, hopefully able to instruct or partake in the array of sports enjoyed by the children.
