Job overview

The Post

We are looking to appoint a well qualified, enthusiastic graduate to teach Psychology (0.5) in the Sixth Form in this academically selective school.

This is a one year maternity cover position from January 2017.

Management points may be available for a suitably qualified candidate.

The School

King Edward VI High School for Girls (KEHS) is one of the most successful girls’ schools in this country with outstanding academic results and a large programme of extra-curricular activity. The school is an independent day school with 577 girls aged 11-18 and is part of the King Edward VI Foundation, which has eight schools in Birmingham. It is situated on a beautiful 50 acre campus in Edgbaston, which it shares with King Edward’s School. It is only three miles from Birmingham city centre and has excellent transport access by road and rail (the University train station is only a 10 minute walk).

The Department

Psychology is taught at A level, and we currently follow the new AQA specification, which was introduced in September 2015, with the first A level examinations being taken in 2017.

As a subject choice, Psychology has grown in popularity in recent years. The department currently has two groups in the Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth (Years 12 and 13). Psychology examination results are very good with 75% achieving A/A* at A level in 2016.

As a department we aim to extend the pupils’ learning beyond the classroom and the specification, through trips, visits, and outside speakers. This academic year we shall be taking girls to the ‘Science & Pseudoscience Conference’ in Nottingham as well as arranging for a PhD student from Birmingham University to speak to the Upper Sixth on the topic of Biological Rhythms and Sleep.

Application Procedure

If you wish to be considered for this post, please complete an application form giving full details of your qualifications and experience and the names, addresses and telephone numbers of two referees and send it, together with a letter to the Principal outlining the reasons for your application (no more than 2 sides of A4) by noon on Monday 10 October 2016. Interviews will take place provisionally on Monday 17 October 2016. Applications can be sent to recruitment@kes.bham.sch.uk
