Line Manager:  Child Welfare Manager

Job Purpose

To assist the Child Welfare Manager and Child Welfare Officer in developing the school as a high quality specialist provision for pupils with emotional, social and mental health difficulties (SEMH) through providing the highest standards of pastoral care for all pupils of all abilities in a safe and orderly learning environment which provides a high standard of behaviour. 

Areas of Responsibilities and Key Tasks

Strategic Direction and Development of the School

  • Contribute to raising achievement by improving school attendance
  • Maintaining and monitoring attendance across both sites
  • Using the school’s data management system to complete registers, run reports and record pupil data
  • Reporting pupils with attendance of 85% or below to the Child Welfare Manager
  • Follow up attendance of primary school pupils in agreement with the Child Welfare Manager
  • To establish the reason for non-attendance, make assessments and agree a plan for facilitating a return to school using appropriate strategies within specified timescales
  • To promote positive attitudes by students and families towards education and to ensure parents are fully aware of their statutory responsibilities
  • To make unsupervised contact with families in their own homes and elsewhere to assess the reasons impacting on the attendance of individual students, facilitating their return or access to regular full time education provision ie. Home visits and/or meetings in school (non child protection)
  • To be fully aware of and carry out all work in line with safeguarding procedures.  This may involve attending planning meetings, as well as core groups and TAF meetings.
  • To work with identified external professionals/agencies e.g. social workers, CAMHS, SEN departments
  • Accessing available community and other agency support for families
  • Attending Child in Need (CIN) meetings, including keeping accurate and concise records, feeding back to Child Welfare Manager and SLT
  • Supporting children and families using the common assessmemt framework (CAF) and supporting the CAF process by collating information.
  • Attending CAF training courses and appropriate CPD.
  • To work within the philosophy of the school at all times.  
  • To have professional integrity and discretion in relation to the overall function of the school, staff and pupil confidentiality.
  • To ensure all individual files and records are kept up to date and maintained on a strictly confidential basis.  

Pupil Care and Welfare

  • Be familiar with and supporting all staff in following the school’s safeguarding policy.
  • Be aware of, and comply with, policies and procedures relating to child protection; health and safety; confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to the appropriate person.

Other

  • Review, assess and comment on (orally and written) his/her practice, programmes of work and to participate in the arrangements for his/her further training and professional development as Child Welfare Support.
  • Comply with the school handbook and the requests, memos and directives given by the Headteacher / Deputy Headteacher / Child Welfare Manager

Working Time

  • The Child Welfare Support will be required Mondays - Fridays
  • Working hours to be agreed.

Essential

  • GCSE’s in Maths and English, grade C or above (or equivalent)
  • Ability to build relationships with adults & young people
  • Ability to work on own initiative and prioritise tasks
  • At least one years related experience of work within a school
  • Experience of working with professionals from other agencies and in multi-agency context
  • Working knowledge of IT systems to compile reports as well as analysing statistical data for monitoring purposes
  • Driving Licence

Desirable

  • Previous experience of working with young people, preferably in an SEMH educational setting
