Job overview

The Governors would like to invite applications for a Reading Champion at St Mary’s Catholic College.

St Mary’s is one of the two Diocesan high schools for students of all abilities that serves families on the Wirral. In November 2016 St Mary’s joined the Holy Family Catholic Multi Academy Trust, it is an exciting time for our College.

The opportunity for the two schools to work collaboratively to share best practice is already beginning to bear fruit; with significant improvements in English and maths results in 2017 and 2018 and a very significant improvement in our College's Progress 8 score placing us in the top 7% of schools nationally for improvement in this measure in 2017. Together we have been able to offer a programme of continuous professional development that we believe is second to none. There is bespoke provision at whatever career stage a colleague is at currently to meet their professional needs and ambitions.

We are looking to appoint a self-motivated, well organised individual to be the face of reading at St Mary’s and take a leading role in planning and organising a school resource centre which supports the whole school reading priority.

We are seeking someone who is passionate about reading who places children at the forefront of their decision making. The successful candidate will be responsible for prioritising reading to allow pupils to access a full curriculum offer by supporting students to improve their reading through your leadership of a reading intervention programme across key stage 3. This role will also manage our busy and thriving library.

The ideal candidate will have:

• A knowledge and love of children’s literature

• Be aligned to the ethos and values of St Mary’s through a child-first approach to  their work

• Some experience of supporting children to improve their reading

• A high level of organisational skills

• Ability to communicate effectively with all members of the school community

• Be self-motivated and able to work under own direction

The post offers the opportunity to make a vital contribution to a key area of school life and the opportunity to work with our students of whom we are very proud.

We are committed to safeguarding the young people in our care, and we expect all our staff to share this commitment.  The successful applicant will be subject to relevant clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Please contact the College for an Application Form and Job Description or download from the Vacancies area of our website http://www.stmaryswallasey.com Completed Application Form and covering letter to be returned to the Headteacher, Mr. A. Boyle

Closing Date: Thursday 20th June 2019 at 12.00 midday.
