Regional Schools Commissioners monitor the performance of the academies, free schools, university technical colleges and studio schools in their area. They take action when any educational institution is falling below the standards of service delivery that its pupils deserve. They also approve the conversion of maintained schools to academies, sponsor new academies, and advise ministers on free school applications. The Department for Education is looking for an outstanding educational leader to take on the role of Schools Commissioner in the West Midlands region.

You’ll come from a senior role in education or a field of similar size and complexity, and you’ll have a firm grounding of national educational policy. You’ll need strong analytical skills, with the ability to use data and other intelligence to help you make decisions on new academies, and energy and passion to improve the impact and performance of institutions in your region. The scale and responsibility of the role will call for a first-rate communicator and influencer, comfortable dealing with the press and with a range of senior stakeholders. And you’ll possess the personal impact, leadership skills, and commitment essential to deriving the maximum possible benefit from the public resources allocated to your region’s schools and academies.
