Job overview

Sydney Catholic Schools is a system with over 145 Primary and Secondary schools. We are looking for teachers in the area of Religious Education who can deliver outstanding academic outcomes for our students.

Hear from what some of our Religious Educators have to say about the role.

Melissa Watkins, a Religious Education Teacher at St Therese Catholic Primary School Denistone has worked with Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) for over 15 years and was drawn to the role of Religious Educator. Here is how Melissa described her role;

‘Being a Religious Education Teacher in Sydney Catholic Schools is a privilege. Religious Education plays a crucial role in the life of a child. I believe we are given a unique opportunity to nurture and develop the faith journey of our students. Teaching the rich RE Curriculum helps our students in comprehending and valuing the Catholic tradition. Being a RE Teacher aims to give students a sense of wholeness, identity and a deep and true understanding of the meaning and value of life’ – Melissa Watkins

We asked one of our Religious Educators, Cyrano Menezes at Corpus Christi College Maroubra, ‘What inspired you to become a Religious Education Teacher’. Cyrano replied ‘Being a Religious Education Teacher has given me an opportunity to assist in forming students as agents of change in the world. By highlighting the positive aspects of Catholic social teaching, I have been able to illustrate the ways in which students put their faith into practice in their local and international communities.’

“To be entrusted with the teaching of the young is a great gift and grace of God.”

“Young people need the light of watchful guides to lead them on the path of salvation.”

“Your faith should be a shining light for those whom you teach.”

– St John Baptist De La Salle.

Christina Breda, an Assistant Religious Education Coordinator (REC) at LaSalle Catholic College Bankstown has been leading the way in Religious Education. Having spent time as a Youth Ministry Coordinator and Religious Education teacher, Christine has progressed to an Assistant REC building close relationships with our Family Educators and Parish priests. When we asked Christina what she enjoyed about her role, she said ‘we are given the opportunity to not only teach Christianity within the classroom but to be models of Christ’ – Christina Breda

‘As a Religious Education teacher, we are given the opportunity to not only teach Christianity within the classroom, but to be models of Christ and bring students to encounters with Christ.’

Every lesson provides us with the platform to nurture the teachings of the Church and demonstrate the faith, which is impactful to the development of the whole person and teaching students how to “be good” and “do good,” within our ever-changing 21st century world.
