About Us

The National Institute of Teaching (NIoT) has an unswerving commitment to high quality, evidence-informed teacher education, and is on a mission to improve the quality of teacher and leader development across the system.

The Research & Best Practice Division of the NIoT researches what works best in teacher and leader development. We synthesise and generate evidence showing practical ways to improve training or professional development. We will use the evidence to inform the programmes that we offer. We will also communicate it to schools and providers across the sector.

About the Role

We are recruiting a Research Fellow to work alongside the Head of Evidence Synthesis to design, implement, and disseminate evidence syntheses on a wide range of topics related to teacher education and professional development. The role also includes opportunities to manage evidence synthesis projects, to liaise with stakeholders in teacher education (e.g. academics, schools, teachers, policymakers), and to generate and sustain research-practice dialogues with schools and teachers using synthesised evidence. In addition to being a specialist in evidence syntheses (qualitative and/or quantitative), you will be an innovative and practice-minded researcher who strives to bridge the nexus between research and practice in teacher education.

This is an exciting opportunity for researchers looking to make a tangible and immediate impact on practice, and who wish to utilise their skills and expertise to conduct evidence syntheses on topics most relevant to teachers and teacher educators, and engage in dialogues with practitioners based on synthesised evidence. This is an opportunity to grow your skills as an independent and innovative researcher.

Key benefits available to all National Institute of Teaching staff:

  • Flexible start and end working times (core hours between 10am and 4pm)
  • Flexible working opportunities
  • At least 27 days’ holiday a year (plus 8 bank holidays)
  • Local Government Pension Scheme

We think a wide range of different work and educational experiences could support you to be successful in this role. We encourage applications from all backgrounds, communities and industries, and are committed to employing a team that has diverse skills, experiences and abilities.

Learning That Changes Lives

A teacher’s expertise makes a greater difference to a pupil’s success than any other factor in a school. The National Institute of Teaching exists to nurture the talents of teachers and leaders at every step of their career, whatever the context, wherever they are in the country.

About the National Institute of Teaching

The National Institute of Teaching (NIoT) is run by the School-Led Development Trust, a charity, founded by four of the country’s leading school trusts: the Harris Federation, Outwood Grange Academies Trust, Oasis Community Learning and Star Academies, and supported by the Department for Education.

The Institute will boost the quality of teacher and leader development nationally by generating and interpreting research, applying the insights to the design and delivery of high-quality teacher and school leader development programmes, and sharing it all with the sector.

We are building a school-led movement, strengthening relationships and collaboration across the system.
