Job overview

Our school Royal School for the Deaf Derby is a unique provider of day and residential placements for deaf children and young people aged 3 – 19 from a national catchment area. We are a speaking and signing community with a qualified, competent and confident staff team working together to ensure all children and young people leave with the know-what and know-how to make the most of life beyond school.

We are looking for a Residence Lead to maintain and improve our residential provision. There are currently 10 students in residence, aged 11-19 across living in two houses from Monday to Friday during term time. All our young people are deaf and have an EHCP. Residence buildings are located at the heart of the school campus and an integral part of school life. Plans are afoot to further develop the built environment to provide a more contemporary space for children and young people to live and learn in.

The provision is consistently rated as good and outstanding and we are keen to increase both the number of children in residence and the range of experiences on offer.

All children and young people in residence are fun to be with, respectful and hardworking. Those who have earned our trust and confidence live on campus independently.

All staff benefit from an individualised continuing professional development plan including accredited British Sign Language tuition for those who do not currently sign, There is no shift or weekend or holiday working – the pattern of hours is flexible.

More information about life in residence is on our social media feeds and website at, https://www.rsdd.org.uk/

Experience of leading and/or managing a residential provision for children and young people is essential. Drive and ambition are too. We are determined to continually improve and ensure the experiences of all children and young people are at the heart of our everyday practice.

We want our new residence lead to have the highest ambitions for our amazing young people - a person that can set expectations high and enable children and young people to achieve their best.

Our residence staff team are driving the success of our provision. Heads of House, Evening Co-workers and Waking Night Workers are qualified, competent, confident and fully committed to providing the very best quality of care in an environment which is safe and happy.
