Job overview

Resident Graduate Assistants (Academic)

White Lodge

We are seeking trustworthy, committed and flexible graduates considering a career in teaching or a related sector. They will be responsible for supporting the Senior House (Years 9 to 11) or Junior House (Years 7 and 8) at White Lodge, ensuring that students have a secure and supportive ‘home from home’ during term time. They will also have a timetable acting as a classroom assistant and supporting students on a one-to-one basis in addition to providing daytime cover within the boarding houses. Suitable training and ongoing support will be provided.

Location: White Lodge

Duration: Fixed term 1 year, September 2019 - August 2020

Salary: £16315.92 - £16637.50 per annum dependent on hours

Accommodation will be provided inclusive of rates and utilities at White Lodge

Hours: Full-time with two evenings per week off duty and 15 week-ends per year on duty (although staff may be called upon in an emergency). This includes 6 fixed week-ends.

Every effort will be made to provide a 24 hour period of non-contact time per week. Where this may not be possible for timetabling reasons, then suitable arrangements for substantial periods of non-contact time will be made. For the avoidance of doubt, the boarding week runs Sunday-Friday and the weekend constitutes Saturday.

The Monday to Friday day-time commitment will be in the region of 11 hours averaged over the term. This situation reflects current working rotas, however flexibility may be needed on occasion to meet operational requirements.

This role includes providing one week of cover for the Spring Intensive Course at White Lodge during the Easter holidays.

Holidays: House staff must be resident during term time (even on nights off), in case of emergency, but may ask permission from the APPW for occasional absences for special occasions. No holiday may be taken during term time, the last week of the summer break or when there is planned Inset. This role will be required to be part of the Summer School team.

The Royal Ballet School is made up of the Lower and Upper Schools. The Upper School has 83 students aged 16-19 and is situated in new buildings in Covent Garden. Almost all of the graduating students go on to gain dance contracts with classical dance companies within the UK and around the world. The Lower School, situated at White Lodge in Richmond Park has 124 pupils of which 121 are full or weekly boarders.

The Royal Ballet School is a unique place, our mission statement ‘To celebrate the past, herald the future but concentrate on the present’ sums up the atmosphere completely.

Whilst we are proud of our place in the birth and development of classical ballet in the UK we are mindful of the need to move forward. To this end a major redevelopment of facilities at both the Upper and Lower Schools has recently been completed as have improvements to the first and second year boarding facilities in Barons Court and Covent Garden. The School is a member of SHMIS and of the National Association of Music and Dance Schools (NAMDS), a large number of our students (UK and EU) receive support from the DfES under the Gifted and Talented Scheme. Many non EU students are supported by generous scholarships and bursaries which are funded by the School endowment fund or by individual sponsors.

The Upper School is truly international with over 30% of the students coming from overeas and of these approximately half will not have English as their first language.
