Job overview

Resident Hockey Coach, Kent

to commence September 2017

Full Time for 2 terms. - Competitive salary dependent on experience and qualifications. Accommodation provided on school site, 3 meals per day and access to the on-site sports facilities.

This is an exciting opportunity to support our hockey players and school teams in fulfilling their potential. With an increasing number of pupils making significant progress in the single system as well as teams competing for County honours, we are looking for a coach to support our existing staff. Hockey is a major team game for boys and girls from ages 7 to 18 and this post is designed to have input across all ages, ensuring continuity and high standards throughout.

The 2016-17 season was our most successful to date with the Under 18 team crowned County Champions and captained by our first ever Junior International.

Ashford School has recently benefitted from significant investment in sports facilities which include three indoor swimming pools, fitness suite, dance studio, two sports halls and two full size flood lit Astroturf pitches. Grass pitches totalling 25 acres have been developed in the last year and include 3 cricket squares, 5 rugby pitches and a 400m athletics track. To provide fantastic views of the pitches and also accommodate 4 changing rooms, work on a modern and eye-catching pavilion will soon be underway. This recent investment in facilities has been supported by a similar investment in staff. The large department of PE specialists is supplemented with external coaches, many of which have or currently play at the highest level.

These resources are in place to support the schools’ competitive sport for all ethos. Our sports programme is accessible to all and tailored to meet the aims of our pupils. The ambition to field competitive teams in all major team games, swimming, biathlon, triathlon, athletics and tennis is relished, but is no more important that providing opportunities that will promote lifelong participation in sport.  The role that competitive sport plays in developing character is widely celebrated as are the sporting achievements of our increasing number of pupils who compete at County, Regional and National level.

Applications are invited from those who are currently playing (or have recently retired from) National League Hockey. The ability to coach at least one of tennis, athletics or cricket is also desirable.

Closing date for receipt of applications: 12 noon on Monday 12th June

Interviews: w/b 12th June

About Ashford Senior School

Ashford School is one of the UK's leading coeducational independent day and boarding school, founded in 1898, and voted Independent School of the Year 2010/2011.  The school was endorsed as outstandingly successful in every category during the most recent inspection in 2014.  In September 2014, Ashford School became a Teaching School; only one of four Independent Schools in the UK to do so.  There are 850 pupils, comprising Bridge Nursery in Ashford, looking after children of 3 months to three years old; Ashford Prep School in the rural village of Great Chart, a preparatory school for children between 3 and 11, and Ashford School, a senior school for girls and boys aged 11 to 18, occupying a prominent 25+ acre site close to the centre of Ashford and within a short walk of the International Station. There are good rail, road and bus links to Ashford and London (37 minutes) and the school operates its own bus services to outlying villages.

Teachers at Ashford enjoy a welcoming, comfortable and well-resourced environment and are provided with assistance from a range of support staff.  All teachers act as tutors and are expected to contribute to the co-curricular life of the school. Responding to the needs of the individual student - be it preparing for examinations in after-school classes or guiding the most able through Olympiad problems - is at the heart of the department and School ethos.
