Job overview

At Benenden we are passionate about education in its broadest sense. We are a full boarding school with exceptional facilities and are committed, through our Complete Education, that every girl will leave at the end of the Sixth Form full of compassion and confidence to fulfil her ambition, embrace challenge and make a difference.

Benenden has approximately 550 pupils, all of whom board. There are 10 boarding Houses: 6 Lower School Houses and 4 Sixth Form Houses. Each Lower School House has between 55 and 65 pupils. The role of a Resident Matron is incredibly rewarding and you will be working as part of a close team in the Boarding House. You will work particularly closely with the resident Housemistress and their Deputy in looking after the pupils, nurturing and guiding them on a daily basis. Being a Resident Matron is a demanding role with long hours but the rewards and ability to make a difference to the young people in your care more than makes up for the late nights. There is a generous amount of time off each week too. The Resident Matron accommodation is within the boarding house. It is a one bedroomed flat on the first floor of the House.

If our values resonate with you, and you would relish the opportunity to be a part of a busy selective girls’ boarding school community, we would be delighted if you would consider joining our boarding team. Benenden offers its own generous pay structure, responsibility allowances and benefits.  Staff are provided with meals whilst on duty, catering for all tastes and dietary requirements. The School’s leisure facilities, including wonderful grounds, a fitness gym and swimming pool are also available for staff to use.

As an exceptional School, we want to attract, retain and develop diverse talent at all levels so that our pupils feel and understand the power and depth of a diverse community. This means recruiting from the widest possible pool of talent, removing barriers that can prevent people from showing their full potential, and fostering a fully inclusive environment which maximises collaboration and empowers everyone.

If you would like to know more about the role, have never considered independent schools and would like to find out more, or would like to ask specific questions, please contact Anne Wakefield, Deputy Head Boarding and Pastoral Care on 01580 240592.

To apply, please download the application pack from our website by clicking the apply button.

Completed applications should be emailed to Mrs Julia Card, Head of HR & Compliance at recruitment@benenden.school by 9:00am on Monday 19 April 2021.

The post-holder will be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children with whom they come into contact. Candidates must ensure compliance with the School’s Child Protection Policy Statement at all times. This appointment will be subject to Disclosure and Barring Service checks. Benenden School is committed to equal opportunities and equal pay for all employees.

Benenden is regarded as one of the leading boarding and day schools in Britain. Founded in 1923, we are situated in 250 acres of attractive parkland in Kent, the Garden of England, just an hour from London. There are 550 girls in the School, aged 11-18.

We offer every girl A Complete Education in which she realises her academic potential, grows as an individual and is well prepared for life beyond school.

This is achieved through an outstanding academic offering which will help your daughter to achieve her very best, together with unrivalled co-curricular opportunities and a dedicated focus on developing every girl's personal and professional skills.

We are proud to consistently hear that the girls at Benenden are happy and relaxed, and that there is a culture of 'stretch without stress'. Parents tell us that they simply 'got a feeling' when they visited Benenden that they knew it was the right school for their daughter.
