St Oswald’s Parish Church is at the heart of the town of Oswestry, a Church of England Church led by the Reverend Harvey Gibbons. It is an environment which enables all to come closer to God through prayer and worship, reflection and action.

St Oswald’s and Oswestry School have a relationship of more than six centuries, with the original school building still standing beside the churchyard. The School supports the Church’s musical life with generous scholarships. Oswestry School holds weekly chapel services as well as its larger celebrations, including Founder’s Day, in St Oswald’s Church.

Resident Pastoral (Chaplaincy) Assistant

Oswestry School and St Oswald’s Parish Church offer an exciting opportunity to serve two close-knit communities. We are looking for a suitably experienced person to be a Pastoral (Chaplaincy) Assistant. 

Responsibilities will be divided equally between the School (Bellan House and the senior school) and the Church and will be tailored to suit the strengths and interests of the successful candidate. Accommodation will be provided.

The role will suit a practising Christian with qualifications in or, proven experience of, working with young people.

The post holder will be supported by a small allowance. As a residential position, all costs, board and lodgings, are provided. Oswestry School benefits from excellent facilities including artificial pitch, gym, pool, and a sports hall with two indoor netball courts.

Located in the ancient town of Oswestry in the county of Shropshire, the School was founded in 1407 and, as such, lays claim to being one of the oldest truly independent schools in the country. It is located in a beautiful corner of Shropshire close to the Welsh border and enjoys a campus setting and extensive playing fields. Just 30 minutes from the market town of

A recent ISI report described pupils as “energetic, articulate and responsible throughout the school.” Deliberately non-selective, the School strives to nurture and develop the talents and abilities of each and every pupil both inside and outside the classroom. Recent facility development includes a floodlit astroturf, the Momentum Sports hall, a refectory and a new library.

Values and vision

As a relatively small independent school, Oswestry School is able to offer smaller class sizes as well as a close academic relationship between staff and students. The school adopts a traditional approach to pastoral care, uniform and behaviour. Staff have high expectations of the ability of pupils to police their own behaviour and approach their education in a mature and adult way. The school invests heavily in extra-curricular activities, with the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme just one of the major activities on offer.
