Job overview
The Ceramics Residency has been running at Giggleswick for almost 20 years and during this time the position has been taken by an enormous variety of different ceramic artists/potters. There is a strong emphasis on the quality of the applicant’s own ceramic work, particularly ceramics that show innovation and experimentation, either within functional ceramics or more sculptural orientated work. Previous teaching experience is not necessary, enthusiasm, knowledge, passion, and an ability to communicate, are the key qualities.
The successful applicant will have a commitment of approximately 12 hours a week to the Art School (term time only). This will involve teaching small groups of pupils and individuals ranging from KS3 pupils through to GCSE and sixth form students. Residents are encouraged to develop their own projects for the pupils, enabling residents to work to their own strengths and it also introduces the students to a constant variation of approaches and skills. There will be plenty of support from the full-time teaching staff. There are many reasons for applying for the one-year residency. The post can be an excellent springboard for anybody thinking about teaching as a career, or it is a good opportunity to focus on developing a body of their own work. The resident will have access to the ceramics facilities in order to develop their own work, and there will be an exhibition at the end of the year.
The Resident Tutor is an integral part of the boarding house system with a significant role to play in the welfare of pupils within the house and the day to day running of the house. The Resident Tutor (Resident House Staff) has responsibility for the pastoral, social and academic welfare of students within their boarding house, particularly in overnight supervision where they are the in-house staff.
The role of a Resident Tutor is a unique one and brings with it a scope to get to know pupils well, allowing for a wide scope of Pastoral Care. Each House, and indeed each Resident House Staff is unique, having its own identity and ethos. The role is varied in its nature, necessitating significant involvement, alongside the House Master/Mistress in the running of the house.
