Job overview

We are seeking an exceptional, highly experienced Maths specialist to work with a family on a residential basis, primarily based in Seattle with regular periods of international travel, including stays in Central Asia. The student typically attends school, aside from holidays and periods of travel, tuition will be limited to after school and occasional weekends.

The Student

The student is 11 years old, is academically capable and currently performing in line with his peers but is not yet at the level required for highly competitive 13+ entrance examinations, including Eton-level entry. He is bright, highly engaged and picks up concepts quickly when well supported. His preparation will need to focus on raising attainment, strengthening exam technique and ensuring he is fully prepared for selective school entry.

The Role

This is a highly involved, residential position where the tutor will take responsibility for all aspects of the student’s Maths learning, as well as playing a key role in his wider development.

The successful tutor will:
  • Take responsibility for the student’s Maths led programme.

  • Ensure the student’s level reaches and extends beyond the required level for competitive 13+ entrance examinations, including Eton-level entry.

  • Be autonomous and a self-starter. The ability to use time effectively is crucial.

  • Be able to provide the full suite of resources necessary for teaching.

  • Provide additional light academic support for two younger siblings (ages 7 and 4).

Tutor Profile

The ideal tutor will have a Mathematics degree (with a strong preference for a qualified teacher with PGCE/QTS and school teaching experience) and will have specific experience preparing students for competitive entrance exams. The family is looking for someone who is confident, highly skilled, and able to design and deliver a structured academic programme independently, with minimal oversight. The family are seeking a tutor who is not only academically outstanding, but also confident working within a high-trust, low-supervision environment and comfortable with a globally mobile lifestyle.

Practical Details
  • The role will involve approximately 30–35 hours per week, including planning and preparation time, delivered across weekdays and some weekend hours.

  • The family is offering excellent working conditions, including separate accommodation.

  • The weekly salary is in the region of £2,500 (negotiable for exceptional candidates).

  • Provisions for Visas managed. Please still apply if you do not currently have a US work permit.

Commitment

The role is long-term in nature, with a start required as soon as possible (although the family are happy to wait for the right tutor) and continuity preferred through to 2027.

Applications

Simply Learning Tuition is committed to safer recruitment and applicants will be subject to our safer recruitment application process, which includes a separate application form, a criminal record check and additional vetting.
