ABOUT SUMMER BOARDING COURSES

Summer Boarding Courses (SBC) is a premium residential summer school provider for international students aged between 8 and 17 years old.

Since 2009 SBC has welcomed Young Learners from 139 different countries to study our courses in three prestigious UK boarding schools, and more recently, two Oxford University Colleges.

SBC is committed to providing our students with an exceptional experience. We guarantee a truly multinational learning environment which encourages cross-cultural learning, collaboration and friendship. In 2018 alone, SBC was home to students from 95 unique nationalities.

In 2018, The British Council awarded SBC the maximum number of Strengths in the 15 areas it assesses. As a result, SBC became the first and only multicentre summer school provider to be awarded 15 out of 15 areas of strength in a full inspection, thereby confirming us as one of the foremost course providers in the UK.

THE ROLE

SBC Residential Summer Schools are looking to appoint the following:

STEM (Bournemouth)

Coding (Oxford)

International Relations (Bournemouth)

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Teach lessons using the SBC syllabus and other appropriate materials
  • Prepare and keep class lists, records of work, class registers and prepare reports
  • Manage the classroom behaviour effectively and ensure all students participate
  • Attend teacher and meetings as requested by the summer school management
  • Be observed by the Director of Studies and if necessary, the Academic Manager
  • Lead groups of students on excursions, following pre-planned itineraries, ensuring they are safe and engaged

General Duties

The welfare of students is paramount to us. Although we employ house parents to oversee and attend to the day-to-day welfare needs of our students, every member of the team is expected to assist in maintaining the welfare and order within their boarding house. Both Teachers and Activity Leaders are placed on house duty twice each week to support and mirror the house parent in the pastoral duties of that day.

  • Support House Parent when doing the allocated day’s house duty, including wake-up, supervising students to, from and while in the houses and lights-out
  • Assist at any time, whether on duty or not, with an emergency situation, or where a student is ill or injured
  • Help transfer students to and from the airport if needed
  • Engage with the students outside of classes and activity sessions in a friendly but professional manner
  • Empower students to successfully engage in programme while helping develop their independence, confidence and social skills

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Essential:

EFL Teachers

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Trinity CertTESOL or CELTA, and/or Primary QTS or PGCE in English/Modern Languages with ELT/TESOL subsidiary
  • Previous professional teaching experience
  • Passion for working with young learners

 Summer Study Teachers

  • BEd Primary / Primary PGCE/ or CELTA/Trinity CertTESOL with experience in teaching the subjects covered in the Summer Study syllabus

Desirable:

  • Previous professional teaching experience
  • Previous residential summer school experience
  • Experience of leading students in an extracurricular capacity
  • An interest in sports / arts & crafts / music / drama
  • Awareness of basic young learner welfare needs

Remuneration: Paid weekly, one week in arrears. The rate for Teachers is £550p/w

SBC PERSON SPECIFICATION

All members of staff employed by SBC will be expected to bring certain key qualities to the operation. There must be a professional interest in working with young people and particularly international children. Safety and welfare of the students is of paramount importance at SBC and a practical enforcing of this belief should be a quality exhibited by all staff. In general, we look for staff to be:
