Reporting Line: Head of Rowing

Job Purpose:

Will play an important role in the continued development of the Boat Club. To deliver high quality rowing coaching to a range of different ages and help in the planning of events and training camps and to manage and maintain the rowing equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coaching sculling and sweep rowing techniques on the water across a range of groups, from beginners to senior
  • Running land-training sessions
  • Awareness and adherence to risk assessments and health and safety guidelines
  • Checking the safety of all boats
  • Maintaining the coaching launches
  • Driving coaching/safety launches
  • Reporting on, and monitoring specific groups when required
  • Acting as a crew manager and offering general support for prior, during and after events
  • Assisting with general day to day running of the boathouse and its fleet of boats and associated equipment
  • Ability to repair minor damage to boats
  • Carrying out any such duties as may be reasonably requested.
  • Race and training camp planning

The successful candidate will be likely to fit the following profile:

  • British Rowing Level 2 Coaching would be beneficial
  • RYA Level 2 Powerboat would be beneficial
  • First Aid would be beneficial
  • Weight Lifting Instructor would be beneficial
  • Effectively coach rowing both sculling and sweep to a range of age groups
  • Have a vision for and the ability to translate the Surbiton High School strategy into reality
  • The ability to work as part of a team in a successful and dynamic School and rowing program
  • Experience of operating professionally and safely within a Rowing environment
  • Good communication, organizational, administrative and ICT skills
  • Excellent planning and time management skills
  • A proven track record of demonstrable training and race success with young people
  • Ability to coach crews at a national level
  • Experience of operating professionally and safely within a Rowing environment
  • Possess good judgment and sound knowledge of the river Thames will be essential
  • Experience of collaborating with colleagues
  • Confidence and creativity in managing a large squad of varying abilities in changeable conditions
  • Foreign trip planning
  • Maintaining and repairing rowing boats and coaching launches
  • Rowing boat rigging
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the rowing technique, strength and conditioning, launch driving, racing rules and rowing on the tideway
  • High levels of personal and professional integrity and the ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality
  • A passion for rowing
  • Rowed or coached at a high level and have experience in coaching young people
  • Experience of rowing coaching in an educational setting would be preferable
  • Personal warmth to gain the confidence of pupils, staff and parents
  • Positive rapport with pupils
  • High standards of personal presence and presentation and attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate concisely and sensitively, both orally and in writing, to a variety of audiences
  • A strong work ethic and a flexible attitude
  • Positive, enthusiastic and energetic approach to life, with a can-do attitude
  • Ability to think creatively and imaginatively
