Surbiton High School seeks an outstanding Rowing Coach who is passionate about inspiring, encouraging and empowering our pupils to achieve their very best. 

The School has its own Boathouse on the River Thames, and Rowing is offered as one of the School’s main sports to our pupils from Years 8 to 13.  The Surbiton High Boat Club competes at local and national events, and Surbiton pupils have gone on to race internationally.

Reporting Line: Head of Rowing

Tenure: Part-time approximately 28 hours per week. Weekend working will be required as well as attending rowing events and training camps.


Key Responsibilities:

  • To assist the Head of Rowing in the coaching and promotion of the Rowing Programme at Surbiton High School
  • To coach sculling and sweep rowing technique on the water across a range of groups, from beginners to seniors
  • To run land-training sessions
  • To drive coaching/safety launches
  • To attend training camps and other training events
  • To report on and monitor specific groups when required
  • To improve the performance of the School rowing teams
  • To raise the profile of rowing within SHS and in the community
  • To be aware of and adhere to relevant risk assessments and health and safety guidelines
  • To attend events as required
  • To attend staff and departmental meetings, as required
  • To undertake minibus training as required
  • To assist with general day to day running of the boathouse, its fleet of boats and associated equipment
  • To create a love of the sport for those pupils who are keen
  • To liaise and communicate with parents and manage their expectations
  • To uphold the School’s code of conduct and the values of Surbiton High School
  • To conduct oneself in an appropriate professional manner at all times, supporting and fostering the aims and safeguarding policies of the School
  • To carry out any such duties as may be reasonably requested


The successful candidate will be likely to fit the following profile:

  • British Rowing Level 2 Coaching would be beneficial (or a willingness to complete a Level 2 Coaching Course)
  • RYA Level 2 Powerboat would be beneficial
  • First Aid qualification would be beneficial
  • Ability to coach rowing - both sculling and sweep - to a range of age groups
  • Ability to coach crews across various ages from J13 to J16
  • Have a good knowledge of rowing/sculling technique and be able to communicate this to athletes
  • Have a vision for and the ability to translate the Surbiton High School strategy into reality
  • The ability to work as part of a team in a successful and dynamic School and rowing program
  • Good communication, organizational, administrative and ICT skills
  • Excellent planning skills
  • Sound knowledge of the River Thames is essential
  • A proven track record of demonstrable training and race success with young people
  • Experience of operating professionally and safely within a rowing environment
  • Experience of coaching rowing in an educational setting would be preferable
  • Experience of collaborating with colleagues
  • Confidence and creativity in working with large squads of varying abilities in changeable conditions
  • Rowing boat rigging
  • High levels of personal and professional integrity and the ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality
  • A passion for rowing and Possess good judgment
  • Personal warmth to gain the confidence of pupils, staff and parents
  • High standards of personal presence and presentation and attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate concisely and sensitively, both orally and in writing, to a variety of audiences
  • Flexible, organized and able to self-direct
  • Positive, enthusiastic and energetic approach to life, with a can-do attitude
  • Committed to the Surbiton High School’s ethos
