Job Summary 

The Safeguarding Officer will be one of the first point of contact for staff members for all Safeguarding concerns. They will be supported by and accountable to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (currently the Assistant Principal) in leading and managing safeguarding and child protection practice at Darwen Aldridge Community Academy, and ensuring the safeguarding and welfare of all pupils in the school. They will coordinate referrals to social care, attending and contributing reports for relevant meetings and keeping careful records of actions. They will work with the Designated Safeguarding Lead in developing and delivering training to school staff and updating relevant policies, procedures and guidance as necessary.  

Key Duties  

- Respond in a timely manner to safeguarding concerns to ensure pupils are kept safe from harm. 

- Pro-actively work with parents / carers and other agencies through joint planning and monitoring of their arrangements for the safeguarding of children.  

- Work with class teachers, the safeguarding team and other agencies to secure good outcomes for children and families especially those pupils who are deemed vulnerable including those with a formal plan (Child protection or CiN or are LAC) 

- Report to the Designated Safeguarding Lead on all safeguarding concerns to ensure they retain oversight of Safeguarding within the school. 

Main Duties and Responsibilities  

• Implement Darwen Aldridge Community Academy child protection policy and procedures.   

• Encourage good practice by promoting and championing the child protection policy and procedures.  

• Respond appropriately to disclosures or concerns which relate to the well-being of a child and provide alerts to the Designated Safeguarding Lead and Principal when these happen.  

• Maintain accurate, confidential and up-to-date documentation on all cases of safeguarding and child protection and provide reports where required.  

• Work directly with children in need and their families in the community in order to promote, strengthen and develop the potential of parents/carers to support children in order to prevent children suffering significant harm or becoming looked after. 

• Liaise with statutory agencies and ensure they have access to all necessary information to make sound judgements and decisions about vulnerable pupils’ welfare. 

• Initiate and refer pupils to outside agencies and co-ordinate referrals.  

• Liaise with school staff in initiating multi-agency referrals for pupils.  

• Act as lead professional and coordinate Team Around the Child/Family meetings, when appropriate 

• Ensure that vulnerable pupils who are victims of abuse and maltreatment are supported appropriately and sensitively and that all actions assigned to school from planning and interventions meetings are successfully carried out and monitored  

• Collate and produce statistical and other information for Governors and the Local Safeguarding Children’s Board with regards to safeguarding and child protection.  

• Support the Designated Safeguarding Lead in the planning and delivering of safeguarding training within the school including induction and refresher training. 

• Attend and participate in Child Protection Conferences and Planning and Review meetings, some of which may take place out of normal working hours, working closely with colleagues in Children’s Services as required 

• Contribute to professional assessments of need and risk in respect of parents and carers using the Local Authority procedures for children in need and significant harm.   

• Coordinate the multi-agency approach to prevent and address child protection issues and children in need at Darwen Aldridge Community Academy. 

• Maintain confidentiality at all times, and ensure appropriate confidentiality is maintained by all staff during safeguarding processes.  

Person Specification: 

Professional Experience, Knowledge & Understanding 

Experience of working in the field of Child Protection with relevant qualifications 

Willingness to participate in further training and development opportunities 

Experience of planning and coordinating meetings in a time-pressured environment 

Experience of using Microsoft Office to produce a range of professional documents 

Abilities and skills 

Significant organisational and administrative skills, supported by a proficiency with ICT 

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including telephone manner, tact, diplomacy and confidentiality 

Excellent interpersonal skills and solution focused approach to professional relationships 

Ability to consult and negotiate with external agencies to reach the best outcomes for children and young people 

Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines whilst still being polite and reasonable

About Darwen Aldridge Community Academy

Darwen Aldridge Community Academy  

Darwen Aldridge Community Academy (DACA) opened in the predecessor school buildings in September 2008, moving to its new town centre location in September 2010. The state of the art building features an entrepreneurship bridge, Darwen Creates. The Academy Sixth Form brought a new education offer for post 16 students with the outstanding new facilities at the Academy designed to be accessible to the wider Darwen community.   

In 2011, its third year after opening, DACA was a finalist in the Academy of the Year category at the Education Investor Awards. On 11th April 2011 Prince William and Kate Middleton officially opened the Academy buildings in one of the last official engagements they carried out before their wedding later that month. Prince William praised the “wonderful, innovative, ground-breaking” academy and stated “I am convinced the academy will transform the lives of families in Darwen and, through its example, countless others elsewhere.”   

In 2013 the Academy saw record A level Results with a pass rate of 100%, and celebrated another first for the Academy when Khushna Sulaman-Butt secured her place at Ruskin College, Oxford to read Fine Art – the first DACA student ever to progress to Oxford University.   

2013 also saw DACA achieve a Good rating in all aspects of an OFSTED Inspection.   

By 2016 the percentage of students achieving 5 or more GCSE passes at A* to C grade (including maths and English Language or Literature) had risen to 65% while the A Level pass rate and vocational equivalent pass rate at the Academy were both 100%, and at A Level only 46% achieved the highest A*-B grades. A record number of 68 of our students applied for and got their first choice of University.   

There is regular emphasis and assessment of the specialisms of entrepreneurship and sport at the Academy. DACA has developed the characteristics of entrepreneurship which are embedded across all aspects of Academy life to raise the potential of students.   

In 2015 the local business community recognised the impact of the Academy’s commitment to developing entrepreneurship with the Enterprise in Education Award at the Hive Business Awards 2015. Weeks later the Academy was named Secondary School of the Year by the Lancashire Telegraph and in October  the Academy was named one eleven schools from eleven countries across Europe to have won the Entrepreneurial School of the Year Award 2015, a national and European recognition of the best schools championing entrepreneurship education.  

 In November 2016 the Academy received a British Council International School Award recognising its “outstanding development of the international dimension in the curriculum”. The award recognised Darwen Academy’s long-term commitment to improving education and enhancing understanding of different cultures through its programme of overseas visits and project work in disadvantaged communities.
