Job overview

I.           JOB PURPOSE

 The School Counsellor is responsible for the provision of services to improve student learning through: educational assessment; individual learning plan development; staff and parent training and curriculum development in teaching social, emotional and values education. The School Counsellor will work as part of a team to provide support and guidance for students to improve student learning and well-being and will play a lead role in developing school wide policy and programs to improve student welfare.

 

II.           KEY RESULTS AREAS/ RESPONSIBILITIES

A.    Leading the following activities and delivery of the following key tasks:

1.   Provide counselling and support to students, individuals and small groups.

2.   Liaise and consult with parents.

3.   Liaise and coordinate with outside health professionals.

4.   Assist in the identification of students in need of individualised learning plans.

5.   Assist teachers in planning and evaluating individualised learning programs.

6.   Provide assistance to teachers to present classroom-based programs for social, emotional health and values education.

7.   Assist Heads of School to develop and evaluate curriculum for pastoral care and assist them in their role of ensuring quality teaching and learning in this area.

8.   Support Heads of School in developing and implementing school wide approaches to gifted students’ provision.

9.   Design and deliver parent and staff training designed to improve approaches to behaviour management, extending learning and in providing individualised learning programs.

10. Develop and deliver programs that improve student self-esteem, wellbeing and engagement in learning.

11. Support Stage Leaders and Year Coordinators in the delivery of programs that support student transition.

12. Project manage small-scale policy and school development projects that contribute to the School’s strategic goals.

13. Provide advice to the Senior Executive on matters of strategic importance relevant to student wellbeing.

14. Review and maintain policies and action plans for critical incidents and other student welfare matters

15. Involvement in co-curricular activities and other school programs.

16. Other responsibilities as directed by the Principal or Heads of School.


III.           JOB SPECIFICATIONS

A.    MINIMUM ACADEMIC/PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATION

1.     Appropriate tertiary qualification and current registration as a Counsellor in Australia or similar setting


B.     RELATED EXPERIENCE

1.     Significant experience providing school counselling and learning support services in ELC-12 settings.

 

C.     COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES)

1.    Registered Counsellor.

2.    High level skills in policy and development.

3.    Outstanding skills in leading staff and parent training.

4.    Highly developed coaching skills.

5.    Highly developed research and project management skills.

6.    Experience across all age groups in a variety of settings.

7.    Effective leadership skills.

 

D.    COMPETENCIES (BEHAVIOURAL)

1.     Independent, self-motivated and good team player.
