Job overview

Would you like to shape the future of one of our thriving academies as a Governor?

We were recognised as a ‘top performer’ in primary and secondary education in the Department for Education’s first set of performance tables comparing academy trusts in England. Three consecutive research reports by the Sutton Trust, a social mobility think tank, have highlighted that the Harris Federation is among ‘the best academy chains (for) having a transformational impact on pupils’ life chances.’ And data experts Watchsted rank us first out of 26 sponsors for improving Ofsted outcomes in schools.

Every Harris academy inspected by Ofsted has been rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ with our governance regularly singled out for praise by inspectors.

Do you have what it takes to be a Harris Federation Governor?

As a top performing MAT, we offer a highly supportive network of academies, principals, mentors and governors.

Harris Federation Governors play a key role in the success of our academies. We are always looking for volunteers to join our governing bodies and help transform children’s futures. We look for aspirational individuals who are keen to play a part in transforming the most challenging schools in and around London into exceptional places of learning.

What training do governors get with Harris?

Our outstanding Harris Teaching School provides a Governor Training Programme. This ensures you are trained and equipped to perform your role as a Governor.

We have expert trainers to help you with topics including understanding school budgets, curriculum, safeguarding, Ofsted, codes of practice, special educational needs (SEN) and the importance of effective data in assessment and evaluation. This means you can be sure you’re up to date with national changes in education and know what’s required to support academies in raising standards.

Harris is a Federation and not a chain; each Harris Academy is different, reflecting the particular aspirations and leadership style of its Principal. All of our primary and secondary academies are rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ and we are recognised for transforming the life chances of the children and teenagers we educate.

The Harris Federation is a not-for-profit educational charity with almost 25 years of education experience in and around London. Our primary, secondary, all-through and sixth form academies have an international reputation for delivering a step change in education standards.

In joining a Harris Academy, you will be working with some of the country’s most exceptional teachers, support staff and leaders. There are frequent opportunities for internal exchange and promotion; our CPD is regularly described as Outstanding; and we have a package of staff benefits that rivals the most competitive of other professions.

Each Harris Academy is led and run by its senior leaders and has its own curriculum and way of doing things. What our Academies share, however, is a commitment to giving their children and teenagers an excellent education within a happy, caring and supportive environment.

There are Harris Academies in many different settings – inner city and suburban – but they are all within a maximum ninety minute commute from each other. This enables a highly collaborative structure, with on-call support from the Harris Federation.

You can find out more on our website (www.harrisfederation.org.uk) or by following us on Twitter (@HarrisFed).
