School Lab Technician with LSA Responsibilities

STAR INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL AL TWAR  is an exciting community in which to teach and learn. The school is looking to appoint Lab Technician who have the enthusiasm, commitment and energy needed to work in a growing and improving school and to support students in all areas where possible. . 

Main duties and responsibilities

The role mainly involves providing technical support in Science Laboratories (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology), ensuring that equipment is functioning properly and is ready to use, and that the right materials are available for particular lessons.

Sometimes laboratory technicians work closely with students to explain or demonstrate experiments or how to use equipment, as well as helping teachers with a class and supporting individual students on research projects.

• liaising with academic staff to discuss timetables, equipment requirements and work plans;

• running trials of experiments prior to classes and then demonstrating techniques for experiments;

• preparing equipment and chemicals before lessons - from test tubes to state-of-the-art microscopes;

• maintaining and repairing equipment and laboratory apparatus; record keeping, e.g. for students' practical sessions, tracking methods, results, etc;

• ensuring that equipment is properly cleaned and that chemicals, drugs and other materials are appropriately stored;

• cataloguing recordings and making them available when requested (if the department houses audiovisual resources);

• assisting the work of teachers in classes and laboratory sessions and giving technical advice to staff and students;

• working with individual students and assisting them on research projects;

• managing the stock control of chemicals and equipment;

• ensuring that all health and safety procedures are understood and followed correctly;

• coordinating work in the laboratory to ensure efficient use is made of expensive pieces of equipment.

Qualifications

• At least Bachelors degree in Science related courses (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology)
• Minimum 3 years teaching experience/as a Laboratory custodian in school and/or college.
• Expertise in minimum of two subjects (Physics/Biology/Chemistry)
• Secondary or Tertiary level of teaching experience

Skills and Knowledge 

• Ability to cope under pressure and remain calm in a crisis or in the event of an emergency
• Effective time management and organisational skills
• Effective communication skills
• Able to follow procedures effectively
• Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop effective working relationships with others
• Knowledge of  chemicals (inc COSHH Control of substances hazardous to health regulations).

Personal competencies and qualities

• Adaptable and flexible to meet the needs of the School
• Able to work effectively unsupervised and complete set tasks
• Ability to work as part of a team
• Able to use own initiative
